are they honestly youre opinions or are you just recycling others? because it just seems that way...........middle classes did benefit from free fees but youre wrong that they had a tradition of sending theyre sons and daughters to 3rd level

where are you getting this information from?

before free education all secondary schools were "expensive private secondary schooling"

the growth in institute fee paying like schools now is generally attributed to the boom times as there is swell of people in the middle class, there was free education before the boom times and there was no rise in private tuition

honestly look up youre leaving cert history book and base youre opinion on fact

    lay off the bum
one of the papers should do his life story, might wreck the mystery though

Known only as the UCD Bum...

I've heard him being called Homeless Joe and Homeless Howard. Does anyone actually know his real name? Anyone ever spoken to him? I thought about it a few times, but how do you start that... "So... You're homeless, eh? How's that workin' out for ye?"

omg, you are all so degrading.

Being called the "UCD Bum" is soooo derogatory....so stop!

I would expect more from people who are supposed to be well-educated, obviously you're not being educated in the right way....none of you seem to have any compassion.....you should be grateful for what you have and stop degrading someone who's struggling to survive......

Hope you remember that it could be anyone of us, at any stage in ours lives, you know - you don't live in a bubble, and if you think you do, things can invade that bubble of yours, like you're invading his right now......he'll probably sue you all for bullying him on line and then you'll be the one walking around like him

Perhaps, its his choice to live this way, maybe its what he knows so he feels comfortable with it, he could've been a lecturer at one stage, who knows....

Had you actually bothered reading the thread, rather than just picking up on a few words here and there, you would realise that the majority of the posters here think of the UCD Bum as somewhat of a folk hero and have done nothing but praised him. Personally I think the rumour about him being Santa Claus in witness protection is the best - yeah people say Santa doesn't exist, but actually he did, until the late nineteenth century when he started receiving death treaths and he was removed from Lapland, given a secret identity as a priest in Sweden and worked there for several decades until his cover was blown sometime in the 80's and he was moved again, which just happens to be the same decade the UCD Bum showed up on the scene. Coincidence - I think not. ;)
As for the term UCD Bum, it's just a name we give him and since many of us couldn't give a flying f**k what the PC Brigade think, will continue to call him this. I don't see it as a derogatory term - in fact it represents a certain familiarity (but at a distance) with this man.
It's like saying you can't call a Bin Man a Bin Man or that you can't call a stocky bald guy in a leather jacket Phil Mitchell. What's going on with the world???

Maybe some day somebody could ask him his real name and we could all call him by that

Oww, my sides hurt. (No offence Grimesbob!)

Go to a UCD beers and if Grimes actually turns up, you'll be more than welcome to down your words with a nice fruity beer, or a Purple People Eater.

OP - don't be scared of the homeless guy, he's harmless. I'm sorry if you feel that people have been a bit harsh with their responses to your post, but take it as reinforcement of exactly how safe you should feel around Homeless Guy - that is to say 100%.

For anyone who's concerned about the impression a homeless person makes on potential investors, perhaps it would be more pertinent to consider things from another angle. A university should, in theory, primarily be about education. If having a homeless person on campus was in some manner detrimental to education in any way, then I could (under duress) understand justification for their removal. However, a university the size of UCD is, in itself, almost a small town. Surely a university environment should foster diversity and acceptance of reality, rather than attempting to establish a cocoon of naivety because acknowledging the real world is just a little bit icky or unfair at times is "upsetting".

    I've heard that myth too.

Hey I've got a theory... What if he's the elusive Pat Patterson? Dun dun duuuuun.............

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

I've got a theory, that he's a demon! A dancing demon, no, something isn't right there.

I've got a theory! He could be dreaming! And we're all trapped inside his wacky college nightmare!

I've got a theory, we should work this out! Because this business could get serious, before we're out!

I've got a theory, he could be homeless! Which is ridiculous, of course it's far too obvious, and not politically correct and I'll be over here.

    I've got a theory, that he's a bunny!

    I've got a -

Bunnies aren't as small as every body supposes! They've been growing bigger, hiding right under our noses! It must be all the carrots, making all those bunnies grow up big and strong! Bunnies, bunnies he must be a bunny!

    *pause*

    Or maybe a rat.

I've got a theory we should work this fast! Because the time for realistic suggestions has past!

    I've got a theory, it doesn't matter!

He's just a guy around the campus! Who he was before's anyone's guess! But he's no harm, of that we're sure. He might have kept, a young girl pure!

It doesn't matter where he came from! Just rest in ease that he will go on! He's The UCD Bum!

    (Could be a bunny...)

I feel particularly dirty for getting the reference despite not seeing the episode

I'm a female student, I'm pretty small, not particularily strong and the words 'creepy' have never crossed my mind when I seen him. He's never really bothered me to be honest, he stands outside the Arts Cafe and waits to be given something to eat. He isn't doing any harm at all. In fact, I've never ever seen him come into any contact with a student or even speak to them for that matter. Fair enough, you're curious about who he is, that's understandable but I don't think it's fair to view him as a threat. He may be homeless but he's not any less valid than the rest of us. I think we're lucky that the one 'different' person we come into contact with in UCD is a timid fella who causes no harm. Have you ever taken a walk outside of UCD?! There are plenty of threatening folk walking around Dublin who are creepy and frightening. He's definately not one of them. I've never seen him drinking and he never appears to be making a nuisance of himself. If I'm being totally honest, I'm actually very happy that UCD help him out by giving him his lunch and so on. Why shouldn't they? If it's there and somebody needs it, why not give it?

The best advice I can give you OP, is count your lucky stars that you're not the subject of senseless rumours and judgement. He's done you no harm. Be happy that you're part of a community which overlooks ridiculous preconceptions and the likes.

I'm going to add to that particular front, making it a bit more popular. It could perhaps even be described as a party. :pac:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he the science bum? He only goes up the arts way to get food. He spends most of his time in the science hub when he's not patrolling. I'm been walking in the magic forest and the secret lake late at night for no legitimate reason a good few times and I've seen him. He's looking for people to save, I think.

I spoke to him once, asked him his name, and he looked so shocked he couldn't reply....I never got it. Most mornings he's sitting on the stairs near theatre C in science. Anyway, he's utterly harmless! He can speak too, I've heard him singing quietly to himself.

There's no such thing as a science bum. Science degrees are useful.

Actually, there are plenty of Science Bums. I new a woman who spent her whole day doing filing, despite the fact that she had a degree in ecologyscience, specialising in biology/ecology/something.

while in UCD I noticed a weird, old guy, in long coat, walking around the campus. Honestly he gives me creeps and im a little concerned, especially i see him and have to walk past him almost everyday.
who is he and should he be allowed to be on the campus?

What is your problem? He has as much right as anyone else to be there. Why do you think for a second that you are any different or better than him? You are under some serious illusions if you think that you are.

I absolutely love that homeless guy. He's part of the university and its always great to see him wandering about having a cigarette or going to get some dinner. As for being concerned...don't. There are a lot of homeless people in dublin and if you're frightned by some timid old nervous man then I think you should just go home and lock your door.
