Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi All

I really want to get involved in Rallying. I have had a look at the Rally Ireland website etc and I've already been to rally school Ireland (fell in love with it)

My Question is how much does it cost (approx) to get setup and what kind of support do I need?

Is there many Rallies in Ireland/N.Ireland?

Obviously when buying parts for the car etc would I get the VAT off?

    Cheers
    G.

http://www.motorsportireland.com id the sport's governing & licensing body in Ireland, most of the info you are after is available through them, either via the website or telephone request for info.

Join your local motorclub (usually have listings, results & information in local press) help out at events, get to know club members, politics of motorsport & the do's & don'ts.

As for VAT...usual business rules & regulations apply, if you are sponsoring your car/kart/whatever via your business, maybe you can claim VAT back, that's more one for your accountant or the revenue commissioners.

It's something I would love to get into myself but I don't have anywhere near the cash at the moment.

A mate of mine done a little about two years ago and loved it but it just got too expensive from him. At the time he was telling me about the costs. The ones I can remember are:

    Entry Fees: €400 > €500 per event

Cars: You will have to start with 1600cc or less. Some examples below:
    http://www.rally.ie/classified.php?classified_id=080725_195438
    http://www.rally.ie/classified.php?classified_id=080724_125316

    Clothing
Race Suits start at about €400
    Example: http://www.ears.ie/product_info.php?products_id=543

    Gloves start at about €50
    Example: http://www.ears.ie/product_info.php?products_id=519

Helmets (Don't skrimp on the €'s here) with intercom start at about €500
    Example: http://www.ears.ie/product_info.php?cPath=68_22_138&products_id=533
    http://www.ears.ie/product_info.php?cPath=68_22_29&products_id=35

    Other costs:

You will need to have a way of getting the car to and from the rally.

If you or your co-driver do not have much knowledge in car mechanics you will need someone who is. At the least you will have to cover their costs if not pay them a fee.

You will need some spares for the car also. Tires, Wheels, Brakes, radiators, Shocks ect.. for when you crash.

You will need fuel for the car.

My knowledge is very limited and I stand to correction, someone with more knowledge may have more info.

U need shead loads for rallying, a chap I know who's racing in the stonetrowers this weekend just put a new lump into his mark 2 shell €30,000 for that alone. Its a sport for the rich i think un less u are born into it.

What he guys said above is pretty true, there is no such thing as cheap rallying, its big money.

Unless you are spending a LOT of money, claiming VAT back is pointless. Expensing your expenses as tax deductible is a smarter way of doing it. You would setup a business name for a company that specializes in marketing through sport and has its own racing team for that purpose :)

    You may also consider:

    Autotesting
    Karting
    Formula Vee
Rallycross (good compromise on rallying cost wise)
    Autograss

Unless you have significant peformance driving/racing experience I'd reccoment that you try to get a seat as a co-driver for a couple of rallies first.

You'll be wanting a HANS device complete with compatible helmet for all rallies as of January 2009. EARS do a deal for the whole kit for just over a grand.

Have you considered doing a couple of sprints/hillclimbs first in order to get a feel for things? I know that in hillclimbs you're more likely only to cover 12 kilometers instead of 120, but there is a great atmosphere at them.
