External Hard drive

Hi, I need to back up my info on my lap top so was looking to buy an external Hard drive. Some questions as I'm not much of a techie: Will I be able to connect my laptop to my TV for movies, photos etc. Did I read somewhere that you can get an X-box that will do the same as above?

easiest way is a multimedia drive that acts as an external hd AND connects to ur telly
