Any examples of prices there? For example how much would a NES cost? How much are games?

I think I'll drop in there this weekend for a look.... Hopefully he hasn't gone for rip off prices.

he has a fully boxed nes with duckhunt and mario plus some boxed games that are in amazing condition, think he said its going for 250 and the games 35. i think this is fair since i visited a retro game shop in italy recently and nes games ( boxed and good condition ) were 75 each.

    Jesus tittyfcuking christ!

I love retro consoles and games but I dont think I could justify that much money!!

I'll pop in myself ... see if there is any DreamCast stuff that catches my eye.

Oh dear, €250 for a NES is insane. I'll buy it off my mate instead.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭philip graham

i think its fairly priced since u pay 500 for a basic ps3 pakage, plus to find a nes in that good condition and fully working now is rare.

:pac: If you want to PLAY retro games, go unboxed -- less than a tenner each.

    Or emulate ;)

250 for a boxed nes? That's insane. They're nowhere near rare. I bought a boxed nes recently in a second hand shop and it cost €15. And the box looked like it had just rolled out of the factory new.

There's making enough to keep a business going and there's taking advantage of people. I'd love to shop in a place like that but won't even consider doing so if the prices are that crazy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭philip graham

its weird, he sells xbox360 games for 18e but nes for more!
where did you get the mint nes? 15e sounds great for one that looks like it was just out of the factory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭accensi0n

    Those are some rip-off prices.

Retro Game store in San Diego was selling a NES console for 50 dollars.

    games ranged from 5-30 dollars.

My mam saw it sitting on a shelf in a second hand shop in Bray. Came home and told me about it. I was convinced it would be gone by the time I ran back down. Lucky for me it wasn't :)

Will have to check this out but €250 euro for a boxed NES is completely insane.

Must take a look, but where is the Moore Street Mall?
Is that the same as the Ilac centre?

250 for a Nes is utterly insane, that guy is probably sourcing his stuff on eBay and making a massive markup, shameful carryon, all we retrofans can do is refuse to buy at those prices, he'll soon change his ways with overpriced stick left languishing on his shelves.

Prehaps the owner reads this forum....:P
As regards his prices, well it is the rip off republic and every retailer tries to
charge as much as they think they can get away with, thats business people!
Personally I hope he does well as it's good to see retro games etc available to the masses.

I made the trek down to Talbot street and was very disappointed, very little there and most of it pretty banged up. Game on dawson street still carry some GameCube and original Xbox games although the selection for both is fairly poor. Only to be expected really.

Amazon.co.uk and ebay are the best places to source older games.

gotta say im pretty happy that he is there too and he doesnt have a great selection but the store is only open a week isnt it? plus i did order a game from him and i have it already:D

right I'll have to go over and check it out tomorrow lunchtime.

Edit: I figured out where it is.

How can he justify €250 for a NES?!?
Madness I tells ya...although €35 aint half bad for the games..saw a retro shop in Amsterdam that were selling them for €70.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭philip graham

the nes with 5 games is now 160 which i think is pretty good. considering the games go for 70 each else where. i told the guy who owns it about this thread and he must have rethough his prices after seeing peoples reactions to his prices:rolleyes:

That place is fecking tiny. It's like a phonebooth, feck all games too. I just saw some PS2, 360, Gameboy. I think he had 3 SNES games. I had expected something bigger to be honest. Not really worth the trek across town but if you live in that area and pass by it I suppose it's alright to pop-in.

true not much there at the moment but like i said its only open a week or so but im pretty happy with the service he has given me.

WOW i never knew the retro community was so high and mighty:rolleyes: the shop has alot more than that and i was excited that it would have more than it does when i heard of its opening but its not open long and no its not my shop i just thought i would talk it up instead of talking crap.

There's talking crap and there's being realistic. Why would you talk something up if it's not going to meet people's expectations? To me that's talking crap.

At the moment from what I've heard, it doesn't really have much. Bar over inflated prices. Which is something that tends to annoy collectors who know a good approximation of how much such items should be retailing at.

Is this place an actual shop or a stall in a market? I'm confused?

thats talking crap! hardly realistic. 18e for xbox360 games isnt inflated and i know they are not retro but maybe as the shop has more business prices of the retro stuff will come down. opening like that would have high costs.

i guess i can see where he is coming from since i have recently started my own business and costs can go through the roof.

and i think a small shop like that is called a kiosk.

No that was at attempt at humour as I collect a lot of games. I thought it was fairly obvious. It had nothing to do with the shop. Go back and read it again.

It's not retro as you said. I was talking about inflated retro game prices.

There should be no reason why the older stuff would be more expensive than the 360 games. It's not that hard to source.

There's no point starting a business with stock at really high prices as nobody will buy anything and your business will collapse.

There are a lot of people, even on this forum as you've probably read, who would only be too happy to buy a shed load of old games if the prices were good. I'd even pay a little bit extra than normal for the convenience of buying something local. But not THAT much extra. There's a knack to getting prices right.

If he does, and gets the stock in and a decent premises, he could be on to a winner. Especially if he's to have interesting events like Street Fighter 2 tournaments.

But anyway, now that I think about it, I'd love to open a retro type videogame store myself. *runs to the bank to get a loan*

Right guys (and gals), I just joined this thread and I want an honest answer: Is there any point in visiting this store yet? I'm a huge retro-gaming fan but Moore Street is well out of my way (I work over near Heuston station!).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,749 ✭✭✭CCCP^

I dunno Kevster, I don't want to put somebody out of business but it's hardly worth the effort. Most of us have more at home than this guy's stock. It's not very interesting :/

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

Thanks, I'll give it a miss for now but will check it out in two weeks when I finish my Summer job.

By the way, nice game collection!

I went to see this mighty emporium of retro gaming goodness and was, in a word, underwhelmed.
The shop looks like a Houdini torture chamber, soon to filled with water and an upsidedown magician, the stock is also all a bit boring, the N64 range, for example, is made up of several common titles, including a couple of Goldeneyes.

To be truthful the stock seems to consist of little more than a few ebay auction job lots and this guy is chancing his arm.

Better to go to Cash Convertors around the corner, or ebay itself,

I won't be makong any special trips to this store again.

Cash Converters? I thought that was only in England? Is there one here in Dublin?

Yep. One in the Moorse Street Mall and one up on Thomas Street I believe. Used to be one in Santry... don't know if it's still there though.

I chanced upon one major cache of n64 games priced incorrectly in the Cash Converters on Thomas street about two years ago. They were nice enough to give them to me at the wrong price. €2 per game. For a whole box of them.

Haven't come across anything decent up there since though.

Yep that's the one... Warning... the smell of noodles down there is pretty overpowering.

I went up to take a look today.

Its a Kiosk not a shop and he isn't exactly swamped with Stock but what he has is interesting at least.

GBA games for €10 to €15, some ok titles too. A few more N64 carts around €16 again some good titles. After that he has some new DS and Xbox360 stuff at ok prices.

He is hoping to get some more stock in next week, he is a nice guy and I hope it works out for him.

Yeh, I was in the one on Thomas Street today. They have a GameBoy there for €50 and the games are only €7.50 or something. Not a huge selection though - I only saw about 5 games there. Plus, that was the only games machine that I saw for sale at the store.
