can your phone number be ported straight from BT to ntl ?

i have broadband with UPC and i also have broadband and my home phone with BT , UPC dont do Voip in my area yet but will do in the months ahead.

i'm going to get rid of my BT broadband soon and then get rid of the phone line when UPC have there phone service available in my area but i need to know can i just do a direct port from BT to UPC or do i have to go BT / Eircom and then UPC to keep my home phone number ?.
