Both Tesco and Dunnes are far more expensive here than in the north. Is there any reason to believe that Asda would retain it's northern prices here?

The prices are only cheaper now because the pound is really low! We lived in Manorhamilton for a while and everybody said it was really cheap there when the pound was high and everything was more expensive (lots). If you want the prices to be the same as in the north dont complain when everything is more expensive when the pound is high!!!

I really dont think asda will find a place in sligo coz the chamber of commerce wont allow any progress, suppport your local rip off!!!

Firstly, I believe you'll find I never complained about prices being high in the north at any stage. Secondly, even taking into account the strong pound and weak euro in the past, the north was not lots more expensive. Maybe the difference wouldn't have justified the cost of a trip to Enniskillen, but at no stage was grocery shopping lots more expensive than here. Many people whined about the exchange rate and didn't do the conversion on actual prices. The fact that they recieved £60 odd for their €100 seemed to lead people to think the north was dear, before taking into account the huge price diffenences on the shelves.
And has anyone noticed the amount of multipack offers in northern supermarkets? Funny you don't see as many 2 for 1 and multipack packaging here. It's one of the sneakiest ways they maximise profits here, by making customers pay full whack for multiple purchases of the same item, while inthe U.K. you can save loads by buying as a multipack.

I don't think grocery shopping is a lot cheaper up the North either. The last couple of times I went I wouldn't pay their prices for quite a lot of the items, most of the things I buy were cheaper here.
I do like Asda for the choice though and also houseware and clothes.

Let's hope Asda opens a petrol station along with the store.
Sligo prices are way above those in Donegal eg diesel is €1.37 in Bundoran Road, €1.29 in Laghy.

Sorry but I can't believe people are still willing to pay these prices!
Sligo Fuels have been consistantly the lowest price in Sligo.
Unleaded currently 119 and Diesel 125/6.
There accessible and open til 8 most evenings.

    Vote with your feet people!

there are a lot of commercial premises and sites zoned for commercial use sitting empty at the moment, and a lot of builders and labourers looking for work.

Agreed, sure are , and a lot of " brown field" sites close to the town centre suitable for development. It would be great to have a decent big supermarket close to the town centre, and close to access off the inner relief road. It would be great to have competition for Tescos, and very handy to be able to the other specialist little shops / financial institutions / restaurants etc just before / after shopping.

There have been some rumours over last few years that WalMart might buy Dunnes Stores. WalMart own Asda in the UK.

Of course, as DS is not for sale, and is a private company, Walmart can't build up any stake in DS, and so I can't see how they would acquire DS.

I was up in Asda Eniskillen last week and they were in the middle of carrying out a pretty extensive survey amongst southern customers. A member of staff there told me that it was part of a plan to introduce more specific services such as home delivery to southern customers as they make up a huge proportion of their clientele. I would imagine this is where the rumour is coming from. I strongly doubt they are opening a store in Sligo. The fact that it was reported in the Weekender makes me doubt it even more

To be honest I do not see why we should have ASDA in Sligo. We've got Dunnes, Tesco and Lidl. I think that is enough. ASDA isn't that great I think. I went to ASDA in Enniskillen 3 times... It was hard for me to find things that I like. Some departments might be ok but most of them are just ewww.

There is other shops that are badly needed in Sligo though if you ask me. Proper DIY shops. Homebase might be one of them but not enough. The retail park in Carraroe is such a waste. That place could be so big with nice shops and everything.

There is also enough diy shops. Connacht gold and Brooks hanley. No need for another rip of merchant like Homebase.

    Aren't we entitled to choice?
Sligo Town does not have any modern supermarket. Tesco is cramped, outdated and small; I hate Dunnes, having to push through clothing to get to groceries is weird, and Lidl only offers a restricted range.
I do not mind who gives the town a proper store - M&S, SuperQuinn, Asda, whatever - as long as we get one.

this is on the front page of northwest express today.

    Asda plans deliveries to south?
There has been some speculation in Sligo recently that British supermarket giant Asda is considering entering the Republic of Ireland by offering a home delivery service. One observant shopper was asked to take part in a survey in Asda Enniskillen: “A member of staff told me told me it was part of a plan to introduce more specific services such as home delivery to southern customers as they make up a huge proportion of their clientele.”Large numbers of shoppers cross the border every day to shop with the Enniskillen store being one of the main beneficiaries. Asda Enniskillen is the sixth best performing shop in the entire Wal-Mart group. Along with Sainsburys, Asda accounts for at least 2.5% of the Republic of Ireland’s grocery market although neither have any shops here.
The press earlier this year reported that Asda had begun home delivery service trials in the Republic of Ireland, although they had not made this service available to the general public. Asda, who are owned by American supermarket giant Wal-Mart, would have to adapt its online model to accept payment in euro before the service could be introduced.
There has been continued speculation that Asda are keen to make a bid for Dunnes Stores and this home delivery service may be their way of thinking outside the box in their attempt to get in to the republic.
Speaking to Northwest Express, a spokesperson for Asda adopted an official line on the issue, saying they have no plans to offer this service in the immediate future but would not rule it out, as they are always looking for new opportunities.
A new postcode system expected to be rolled out in Ireland in early 2011 may make this more likely as a postal code system would mean a more accurate delivery service. There is no indication as to how much this service would cost or how far reaching the service would be but there is no doubt it would benefit the people of the Northwest, taking all the hassle out of cross border shopping.
