    Hi

Hoping somebody out there might be able to help. My OH never sat his Leaving Cert and works in a trade. He wants to go back to college and train as a primary school teacher. He is extremely bright so I know the course work will not be a problem but we were wondering if he will need to sit his LC before getting onto an education course? Also, would he be eligable for free fees?

    All advice appreciated!

    Hi

what i say below assumes your OH is over 23

OH would either have to get a HC3 in Irish in the leaving cert or else pass the first year of an undergraduate course in irish in college or else do some diploma na gaeilge in college.

Lots of people just repeat irish in the leaving just to get the C3 in honours.

Unless OH is going to do one of the specialised primary education degrees OH needs a level 8 undergraduate degree which satisfies the teaching council, which as a mature student OH would get into in college without the leaving cert. OH could also do a distance learning degree. Www.qualifax.ie have the lists.

Www.educationposts.com is a good site to get information and have a chat with primary teachers

free fees would depend on his earnings. Local council higher education grant section could tell you this.

So no he doesn't need to repeat the leaving to get onto a degree course if this is a general degree and then do the post-graduate diploma in education after that.

I cant be sure if he needs the leaving for specialised education courses except that it is very competitive to get in for mature students. Www.qualifax.ie gives the list of education courses and the college site should give entry requirements for mature students

    best of luck

p.s he doesn't need leaving cert irish to be a secondary teacher, just the degree and h.dip, except its supposed to be a lot harder to get a job in secondary. Not saying its easy in primary either

    Hi pathway33,

Thank you so much for your reply-it was both informative and extremely helpful-I suppose as a primary school teacher myself I should know where to look to for advice.

Just to answer one or two queries, the OH is 30 and a carpenter by trade so I'm not sure if he will qualify for the grant. Thank you for all the help-greatly appreciated.

Not only does he need HL Irish to get onto a Post Grad course, once he has a level 8 degree under his belt, he also needs OL English & Maths, so he would need to do these also.
