    Are brand paints and varnish like Dulux etc. better than home brand paints Woodies etc. by as much as their price implies.

    Not necessarily.
    I bought some nice paint in B&Q last month.
    It was easy to apply and actually "looked" like the colour on the tin!
    I'm very happy with it - only E15 for large can.

    IMO Very cheap white emulsion does tend to be thin, taking more coats than Brand paint and therefore a false economy.

    Yes, for the most part...store own brands will do their own premium version that is perhaps 10% cheaper and approaches the quality of established brands, but the yellowpack type stuff is pisswater basically, and is a waste of time and energy. As with anything else, you get what you pay for...
