    Hey all!

Firt of all, sorry for the re-posting of a topic that has previously been done to death, however after reading through all the posts I'm still at a loss! :(

    Basics:
I'm now connected with my PC via the Aolynk router I originally got from Smart, so that's all hunky dory!

I got a new laptop yesterday (running Vista) and I can't get it to connect with my Eircom Netopia router I bought a while back.

Currently I have the netopia router connected to my laptop via an ethernet cable. The wireless light on it is a solid, steady light, however the DSL light is blinking.

It's showing as being connected to a LAN network - I presume that's just Laptop -> router.

I can't connect to the internet.

I have the Eircom Netopia 2247-02

    Software Version: 7.7.0r6

    I can get onto Eircom's Netopia page - 192.168.1.254

And running a diagnostic shows the DSL as failing.

I have already tried a patch for this router which supposedly should make it work with any other DSL provider, but clearly that hasn't worked.

I'm a total novice when it comes to stuff like this, but I'd love to get it working!

    Any advice guys? *looks hopefull*

    This sounds familiar....

Anyhow, did you set the PPPoE as connection type, with the needed Smart username/password and set the VCI/VPI values?

The basic settings for the ADSL connection should have fields for these. VCI should be set to 8, VPI should be set to 35.

You're probably gonna want to strangle me now for asking this, but oh well, here goes...

Erm, where might one input these values? How do I get into VCI/VPI properties? :o

Ok so on the Configuration page:

    VPI 8
    VCI 35

Protocol: PPP over ATM VC muxed

    Static IP Address: 0.0.0.0

    IP Gateway: 0.0.0.0

    Primary DNS Server: 0.0.0.0

    Secondary DNS Server: 0.0.0.0

    Connection type: Always On

    UPnP: (Box is ticked)

    IPSec PassThrough: (Box is ticked)

You need the protocol set to PPPoE, not PPPoA.

Ok, so I made a few changes:

    Protocol: PPP Over Ethernet LLC/SNAP

    Primary DNS: 84.203.254.34
    Secondary DNS: 84.203.255.34

EDIT: Still getting "DSL Connection is down" when I try to save the changes

Did you set the DNS yourself?

    The protocol is correct now.

In the expert mode there should be a page of line stats. Post the info from that.

    In Expert Mode:

    DSL

    Line Stat - Down

I've also tried the following courtesy of Lennyman on the Smart forums:

If you have the latest firmware installed I have version 7.7.0r6 I have Netopia 3347NWG wireless router Check for latest for your model.
Then go to start menu clickk run then type cmd hit enter then follow these instructions.

    Telnet to the modem\router ->
    1. telnet 192.168.1.254
    2. Username \ Passwords (if required i myself did not have to)
    3. Type in *Configure* (with out the * of course)
    4. Type in *dmt type*
    5. Type in *set adsl2+*
    6. Tpye in *up*
    7. Type in *up* (you should now be back at top level where you started)
    8. Type in *ppp*
    9. Type in *set*
    10. Keep hitting enter until port-authentication appears, then change to
    11. type in *pap-only*
    12. Press "ENTER"
    13. Put in your Smarttelecom *Username*
    14. Press "ENTER"
    15. Put in your Smarttelecom *Password*
    16. Press "Enter"
    17. Hit enter a few times.
    18. Exit
    19. restart (Telnet session finishes...)
    20. Wait a minute or two until the "Internet" light turns green...
    21. Then Enjoy

Those instructions should set the modulation to ADSL2+. The light blinking means it's attempting to sync.

Are there not line stats being displayed, attenuation SNR etc.?

    Where do I get those?

    I was looking here:

    Expert Mode -> Statistics

    Which contains:

DSL - which is where I obtained: "Line State = Down"
    ATM
    Ethernet
    IP
    LAN
    Wireless
    Logs

You may wish to update the firmware. There's a later version available.

Right I've downloaded the latest firmware (a bin file) and transferred that to the laptop, however when I go to the routers homepage (192.168.1.254) I can't find the link anywhere to install the firmware bin file!?

Also, the following are set to "Disabled" - should they be enabled?

    Bridging

    Concurrent Bridging/Routing

    ?

You have the patince of a Saint btw! Thank you! :D

Bridging is used if you want to turn the router into something like a modem only, you don't want this, so leave them disabled.

This is their generic document for all routers, firmware upgrade instructions are on p 38

    Just figured it out there!

K, so the firmware upgrade has been installed, re-started the router, still no luck, connection is still down.

Only change now is that the DSL led is unlit now, when before it was blinking so not sure if this is bad/good?

All that's lighting now is the Wireless led

It's probably reset to defaults, you'll need to reset the options again.

Ok, looks like I'm a total idiot!

I had the two (wired and wireless) modems plugged in at the same time and according to Rana over on the Smart modems that's a big no-no!

So I've switched the modems and have the Eircom wireless one connected to my PC now and that seems to be working well - I'm connected through it now, and all the leds are lit up; DSL, Wireless and Internet - which it wasn't doing before.

Just stuck to find the "security key or passphrase" now so I can log onto the wireless network via the laptop.

Thank you so so much for your time and effort going through this step by step for me even if it looks like I was wasting your time all along :o

I appreciate all you've done for me so far though! thank you so so much!!

Think I'm 95% of the way there now.. hmmm.. security key or passphrase.. hmmm...

You needed to set those details anyway, so it wasn't a waste, and no, you can only use one modem per line.

    Actually that is true!

You're a total legend anyhow for putting up with me and my inane questioning!!

    THANK YOU!
