JP Liz - you need to give more info. It could be anything from fleas to an allergy to a blood disorder or something else.

Obvious question - have you gone to a vet? What treatments have you already tried?

    two things:

flea collars are not the best treatment for fleas - there are much better treatments available from the vets

more information would be needed before you'd have any idea of what is causing the itching

    ;)

Bring it to the vet. It could be a bunch of things. It might be fleas, or it might be mites (especially if the itching is around the tail). The mites can lead to serious illness, and the fleas aren't that healthy either, for humans or animals.

Wouldn't be too gone on the flea collar idea - they give off a gas that's mildly poisonous. Advantage or whatever the other one is called would be better.

But you're safer - for both the dog and yourself - to bring it to the vet, who can diagnose in person and from an expert perspective, not as an amateur on an internet forum.

Having worked as a Veterinary Nurse for a number of years i can defo not recommend flea collors. They cause irritation around the neck as you can see from prolonged use, they lose their fur. Also in older animals who have already got kidney problems it can cause aggrivation.

My advice is go to the vets if there is no clear indication of fleas then it could be a case of mites and you need treatment for that, that you cant get in a store. Mites live under the skin of animals and can be very very itchy.

Also be aware of irritants such as dos shampoos or even deoderants used in the dog bed which they can be allergic to.
