    HI there,
Anybody knoww what model of turbo is used on a 115hp vw bora? can a turbo from a the 150hp engine be fiitted safely if necessary?

Might have to change the turbo or else clean it out, is it doable to clean out the soot from the turbo with instructions and without having huge knowledge of how they work?
    Thanks

The turbo is located at the back of the engine near the bulkhead so it is quite difficult to get at. Add to this the fact that the mounting blts are probably rusted and siezed and I think you'd need to be fairly competant mechanically to swap it. I think it can be done with the engine still in the car but its not easy.

    Heres the part no's

Overhauling a turbocharger is specialist stuff, not really for the novice.

But if you want to have a go at it, here's some reading material (with pictures):

Thanks gys, getting nothing but trouble from this car at the moment. Rang the dealership there for quotes on a turbo for the sake of it and the guy there said that he had the same problem i.e. cutting to limp mode. he said that he changed all the pipework with the turbo and it fixed it so might try that and see. hopefully wont be too expensive?

Thanks for the article, got any more on changing pipework as I dont have a clue :pac::o:pac::o:pac::o

What are the symptoms of the problem?

Is the car making any funny noises (more noise than usual, high pitched whining noise)?

Is the car using excess oil?

Does the car not want to accelerate?

Is the car producing excess smoke?

If it is doing any of these bring it to an independant mechanic (forget VW they're rubbish) and get him to drive it, I use a guy in North Dublin City. He used to look after my Golf.

    Hey Ferris,
The car is was was working fine since I got it except it was cutting to limp mode under high stress or around 130kph. Thats the only sumptom. I changed the MAP sensor on it and on the first drive it worked perfect, way higher than 130kph before and no problems. This leads me to think that the VNT isnt sticking originally. However, it happened again and the limp mode kicked in.

Another twist to the tale however is that the head gasket just went on it the same day as I was testing the MAP sensor! Now the power loss is at 2000rpm where the car actually shakes a bit defore losing power.

I was trying to decipher whether the loss in power was the turbo or due to the head gasket and maybe losing compression or something. Since it cut on the 2nd drive with the new MAP before any major issue with the gasket was seen I'm leaning towards I have 2 separate problems going on.

Rang the dealership and the guy on the phone said he had the same thing with a toledo tdi and he changed the pipes and it was grand.

BTW, I had a diagnostic run and got a P1557 error, charge pressure control-positive deviation.

I thought the vanes on the turbo might be sticking but since it went faster than it had ever gone with the new sensor in I'm thinking it mightn't be (hoping).

    stupid car..help?

Actually, thinking about it. Could driving the car hard testing the sensor have accelerated the gasket problem which in turn changed the exhaust pressure due to steam in it? this might account for the turbo or engine(cant tell which but think turbo) kind of shaking at 2000rpm and cutting you think?

bit of a random suggestion here - but I had a corsa that would bring the engine management light under hard work. Never had it checked out. Then found that mid and back box on the exhaust was nackered. Got that replaced and no problem with engine management light since...

With the head gasket going- thats down to insufficient cooling. Check your coolant levels - make sure no leaks. If you MAF is gone you will know it, no power above 2k rpm. You can test it pretty easily by plugging it out and having a drive, if the car feels the same then the MAF if screwed.

If there was problems with the pipework(leak) you would have loss of power all the time

Have you checked you oil levels?
