Non HD ready DVDR with HD Ready TV?

Is it possible to use a non HD ready DVD recorder with a HD tv? Apparently I need a HDMI cable instead of a Scart Lead to connect stuff to the TV - but there is no HDMI connection on the DVDR? Does this mean they are not compatible or can I just use a Scart LEad? Thanks
