Theres a huge difference between slipping during a game and slipping while taking a penalty or free kick and I never slipped taking a penalty. I didn't take free kicks.

Are you saying you should be captain? :D

still wondering what if any correlation taking a penalty has to do with your ability to captain a team? your explanation of this point might help your arguement because as it stands I dont think anyone agrees, anyone could slip on a greassy surface and miss a penalty, I think the fact that he was willing to step up and take it in the first place says more about his ability to lead by example than how good a penalty it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭glenjamin

This is such bull! Just because he misses a penalty hes deemed not good enough to captain England? WTF??? At least he stepped up to take one whether he wanted to or not. I would have my doubts over him if he said 'no, no way am I taking a penalty. Get someone else to take it.' Capello has made the right choice IMO.

Being crap at penalties is compulsory if you are an England player. its the law:rolleyes:

Beckham was a great england Captain and he had a very nasty slip whilst taking a penalty.

I fully agree with you that great players miss penalties. We are not talking about a players greatness here, its about a captain, a leader, and for me he is behind Gerard and Ferdinand. That penalty miss was horrendous, he slipped and thats not good enough, I was gutted for him when it happened but thinking about it afterward it was an unforgivable mistake. If he misses a penalty normally like blasting it over or it being saved thats ok but slipping is not. I like the guy but he has led England before and he has not done a good job imo.

Slipping is an unforgivable mistake???? Are you for f*cking real? Deciding where you're gonna put the ball and changing your mind just as you kick it and then missing can be considered a mistake! Slipping is just bad luck.
And what it's got to do with Terry's capacity to lead the English team, i don't know! The fact that he stepped up when Anelka acted the bo!!ox says more about his leadership than missing a penalty to be honest
And to end, i hate you for making me defend John Terry!!

Imo, there is very little to choose between Terry and Ferdinand in terms of captaincy. Personally, I would have gone with Ferdinand because he seems to up his game that little bit extra when made captain. Terry will always provide leadership, even when not captain.

I wonder how much Capello's decision was influenced by Terry missing the penalty, and whether in part giving him the captaincy is an attempt to boost his confidence after missing that penalty.

You could argue that Ferdinand doesn't really up his game, he's consistently good, while Terry thrives of the captaincy, and is probably someone who needs the captaincy more - so if you look at it from that POV - making Terry captain increases the performance of the team as a whole.

Ultimately though, i think this captain thing is a load of nonsense!! Does it really matter so much?? It seems to me to be an English obsession!!

    +1

Its really boring actually. In International football it means relatively nothing especially against Faroe Islands and others. Nothing more than a (huge) personal honour.

Some guy called mcnulty on bbc has some article about the new english captain...lol....

he makes it out that suggesting gerrard should have been captain was really 'out there' and thinking outside the box.

8 pages discussing the England team, of which the last three are about the captain.

Maybe it is an Irish obsession as well :)
