Waterford Philosophical Society Bloomsday Celebrations 2013

Commencing 6:30 p.m., Sunday 16th June at Phil Grimes, Johnstown.

Following an introductory lecture which will demonstrate some of the ways in which Ulysses can be approached by first-time readers, we will hear guided readings from Joyce’s epic novel. Our celebrations will continue with the screening of a rare documentary about Joyce’s life and work and conclude with a question-and-answer session. While Ulysses will be our primary focus, Joyce’s earlier writings such as Dubliners, Stephen Hero, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man will be referred to at various points in the evening’s proceedings.

Specific themes to be covered include:

    • The Biographical Sources of Ulysses
    • Joyce’s reading of Homer
    Ulysses in its Historical Context
    • Joyce and Western Philosophy

No prior knowledge of Joyce’s writings is required. For further information, please email amcgrat@tcd.ie or call/text 0857238001.

Saw Helen Mirren in Waterford last night, in a play, ok ok it was a live satellite feed in the cinema for the play 'the audience', never saw anything like this before, it was excellent, nearly as good as being in London for the night. Worth checking out in the future as the Odeon will be doing more of these.

Probably a stupid and overasked question, but where DO you go in Waterford for a good rock gig? Is there any? I don't mean like 'rock bands' that do alternative covers/popular hits, Used to love seeing the likes of Black Crow Chicken in Murphys but think they're gone now. I heard good things about Sals, is it any good down there?

Just what to let people know that there is a freeser session on in The Forum on Friday 13th, does not seem to be well advertised. It's a free event and all you have to do is fill in a short form on the Hotpress website and they will e-mail you a ticket.

Bands for the Waterford Jagermeister Freezer Session below:
    • The Riptide Movement
    • The Hot Sprockets
    • Raglans
    • The Dead Heavys

If you or anyone you know has a passion for Metal then here you go. It's been ages since anyone had what it takes to put together a full Metal fest in Waterford, and here it is. I'm not connected with this event but passionate about Metal and live music in our little corner of the universe. Spreading the word would be so cool and many thanks :) \m/

Mad Maker Tuesdays will now be running from 7-9pm every Tuesday at South East Makerspace. This is an opportunity to bring your projects, whatever it is you are tinkering on and work on them in a group environment. This could be anything from an arduino based project to hardware hacking, digital or interactive art, programming, sound art, circuit bending, photography or knitting. The list is endless. If you are not working on anything in particular why not just come along, meet up, share ideas and most importantly, have some fun.
