hi i drive an old ford fiesta and it keeps cutting out on me when i start it up or when im stopping at lights etc! it doesnt happen all the time though! its really strange like that and when it gets a service its fine for a few weeks after but then starts acting up! the garage doesnt know why it cuts out because everything seems fine! Any ideas? i was told by someone who also had one that its something to do with something getting wet but i dont know and i just want to fix it.

    What year is it?

If it's the old carburettor models, then it could be that the jets are partially blocked or the idle settings are set too low.

hi its a 96 ford fiesta classic! i think the garage person turned up the revs and it was fixed 4 a while but now its back to cutting out!

In my experience they can tend to get a bit erratic like this when the engine gets worn. Don't know specifically what the cause is, presumably a combination of reduced compression, some oil being drawn in by the valve stems, worn carburettor parts, leaking vacuum pipes, etc.

I presume that you have highish mileage, as its a 96 car.

Unlikely to be related to the wet if it's happening all the time.

It might be worth checking the float chamber in the carb and that the valve is activating normally. Also check for a sticking throttle cable which might result in the idle settings being off.

This is a fiesta problem alright,if its a 96 its definatly got EFI for the cat and emissions so no carbs. That engine design is prehistoric though, apparently its the same basic block as was in the 1959 anglia, then the escort etc....
This happened on the brothers car too,i think(though not 100% on that)it was a broken vacuum pipe somewhere that was causing the trouble. It would cut out when it was idling,or if he was slowing down coming to junctions.Seems its a common thing.

i heard that it might be the idle speed control valve near the inlet manifold dats dirty or needs replacing but i have no idea where that is and i dont want 2 go back to the garage as they have no idea whats wrong!
it only has 90k on it and it hasnt been clocked or anyting

yeah it does seem to be a common problem but i went 2 d garage with it and they didnt say there was a broken vacuam pipe. does the fiesta have a idle speed control valve?

If it has EFI like carchaelogist says and I don't doubt his knowledge, it would have an idle speed control valve and it could be the cause of the trouble.

Well,if it has a cat it has EFI,if it was built after 92 it has a cat,and if its EFI it has an idle speed control valve.

Have a look through here.. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=12693

I'd go for the air leak in the intake system as a first check.

yeh id imagine an air intake problem, happened on my 98 fiesta i had some years back, same as cutting out particularly after stopping

Could be related to fuel line pressure. There's not much can go wrong here, try changing fuel filter. Only time I've seen a prob with this car, this has been the cause...

I had a problem with mine cutting out most times when I braked. Turned out to be the idel air control valve that was the problem. It's a valve that sits on top of the engine block (I can try and get a picture). Removing it and cleaning it out with carb cleaner should help in most cases. In my case I had to replace the thing.

Does it cut out with a shudder or does it die quietly? Mine would cut out as if someone had just turned the key in the ignition. It would also cut out while idling sometimes. You'd hear the revs start to slow and then the engine would stop.

it dies quickly and u hear d revs get lower and if u put ur foot on the accelator 2 rev it up while d clutch is pressed it wont cut out. I cant find it i looked under the bonnet and i saw the big plastic thing in the middle and couldnt find it. Took that off and did not see it. Also took off the top of it and saw the air filter i think and there was a thing there but wasnt sure it was it. Would anyone know where it is on a 96 ford fiesta classic? Thanks
