Did anyone catch the Kalitta Air Boeing 747F on Sunday evening? I was outside at around 4pm, and it looked like a -200F.
It was a real beauty and was loud too!

Ah I see.. Cool!! What an impressive sight. And an Aer Lingus A330 followed it, but I was still on a high after seeing the 747!

Just saw that This Mornings ETD045 flight is being operated by an A333, A6-AFC. Don't know if this is the norm for that particular flight but all i ever see on the evening one is A332s.

    Don´t want to sound picky, but that is a Blue1 717 ;)

But I am surprised to see it here, was it a charter?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭Kenny2012

Not a charter it's operates a scheduled SAS flight every day.

Ok, looked it up, SAS still do the 18:50 to CPH
    Blue1 do the 11:05.

Fun to catch some new metal next time I go home.
Seen them at CPH and thought about flying them.

I just assumed it was an SAS aircraft with the Star livery. Initially I thought it was a MD-80, the livery caught my eye. Then I checked the flight departures and saw an SAS at that time.

    Thanks for the correction.

So what to really call it. As Blue1 is a subsidary of SAS? Aviation is getting more confusing as we 'progress'!!

    Was just messing with you.

Blue1 is under SAS and uses the same IATA and ICAO code.
Also the callsign Scandinavian is used. So saying SAS about Blue1 might not be off at all.
SAS is pretty special in that case it is divided over so many countries.

Blue1 is I would say SAS Finland since it operates out of HEL, that was why I was surprised to see it here operating to CPH.
But I guess it is new times and the fleet has to be more efficient.

Can anyone tell me is there a reason that the rear of the fuselage on CityJet EI-RJO was open today when landing?

They're called rear speed brakes / drag buckets / spoilers. I'm not sure what the common name for it is in Ireland.

Avro RJ85s don't have thrust reversers, so these make a slower approach possible.

I'm not a pilot so I might be wrong.

    Here'f a Fokker F28 with speed brakes

That's about right, on the RJ the official name for it is airbrake (spoilers are on top of the wings) Not really to do with lack of reversers (reversers are generally only used on the ground after landing, expect for some not so common, usually military airplanes) The airbrake is normally used in flight to slow the aircraft down quickly or descend fast (or both at the same time). It is also deployed on all landings to reduce from approach to touchdown speed. On steep approaches like in London city it is used during the entire approach, the additional drag results in more thrust required which gives a quicker engine response in case of a go-around (and hence the 146/RJ has the lowest decision altitude for landing in London city).
The RJ is quite a slow/underpowered aircraft, but it is unmatched for its capability to decelerate, descend or land on short landing strips compared to similar sized aircraft.
