cheap barge

littleknownfact

due to an every expanding family i am looking for cheap barge to transport the family around.

up front i might as well say that diesels are not my bag, never have been and never likely to either so its petrol all the way. please no japanese either as from a personal stand point i have an opinion which isn't positive im afraid.

i have been considering something like an omega or perhaps a ford scorpio and wondered whether anyone had any experience, thoughts or views on these or any other ideas

And how much do you have to spend?

What sort of budget do you have? Would you consider an older Laguna or a Pug 607 these are good cars that can be picked up for next to nothing.

a couple of thousand maximum. no more than the 3 i swear (she swears - well we both swear!)

as above. laguna is a little mainstream but the 607 makes me think of its predecessor the 605. had forgotten about that

I'd love to hear your views on Japanese cars and of diesels, and your reasons for avoiding them. just curious.

As for cheap barges, Scorpio and Omega are both good cheap cars. you could always go for something like an E class. a large engined petrol model without desirable extras likeauto box or leather would be very cheap, parts will be dearer and running costs higher though,

just a personal preference, there are lots of them on the road and i would mention the like of the corrolla, avensis etc hence my preference for something different. as for diesels it goes back many years of company car ownership with the option of diesel, turbo diesel and that was it - again just a personal preference

i would be concerned about the maintenance/servicing costs of a german barge which i assume would be alot more expensive than with ford, pug etc

hence the butt ugliness of a scorpio with its frog face. i like it because its different, again similar to the 607 suggested another obscure option

you should forget your blanket ban on Japanese cars, as you're missing out on some good stuff.

Nissan Maxima for example. smooth as silk V6 engine, leather, all the toys, faultless reliability, all for tiny money.

Does any dealer network in this country have a decent rep?
The majority of main dealers I've dealt with have been c*nts to some degree, be it Toyota, Citroen, Volvo, Audi or whatever.

I know you said no Japs but what about a 90's Lexus LS400, a similar story to the Maxima. All the gadgets & they must be worth nothing now. One of the lads bought a 2004 for €50k last year & got offered €30k for it as a trade in, the 90's ones must be well in contention for OP?

toyota's aren't bad cars, neither are beemers etc just not what i would like to drive or own

like the safrane, bigger cheaper option to the laguna. another cool motor and cheap to boot

Camry wouldn't be a bad barge, very reliable and comfy. same can be said of Mitsu Galant.

Forget these options unless you have a tow bar and a trailer with pallets of cash behind you. Drop your resistance to change, go with a Nissan Serena...
