Well I didnt get any of my courses in the cao, waste of money or what!!! But i was expecting it since last wednesday as i did awful in my Leaving but since then I was wondering whether to do a FETAC course and hopefully apply for a transfer but today I thought what are the chances of that? Do many people get transfer's?

And also would it be better to repeat the whole of 6th year rather than try and get a transfer? I just don't want to get a FETAC only to not get a place i'd rather spend the year working for a leaving.

i don't know anything about FETAC except i saw somewhere in the CAO handbook that there is a quota of places reserved for FETAC applicants. The word quota says to me that you are still competing with others so no guarantees. I'd say its not like 'heres my FETAC, let me in'.

If you did really awful and awful can mean different things for different people, but a poor leaving can come back to haunt you years down the road when you least expect it.

If it was me I'd repeat the leaving. If possible depending on where you live do it in a specialist repeat class. No need to splash out big money. 200 euro should get you a good repeat course.

    best of luck

Resi12, i was in the exact same boat as you last year i wanted to repeat my leaving but on the other hand i knew in my heart that i was not a clever student therfore had no interest in school and would prob get the same results again so i opted out of repeating. I did a FETAC course and it was best decision i ever made. Got great results in my exams because i had an interest in my course (unlike school) and enjoyed every minute of it! I think if you have no interest in school you are better off doing a course you enjoy.

It would depend what course you're looking for. In some areas, a FETAC is a great advantage as you get practical experience of the area. With FETAC, everything you are doing is related to the area you're interested in. Choose your FETAC carefully. Check that there are strong links between your FETAC provider and your chosen college/area of study. Make sure you get your required distinctions and guarantee yourself a place.

Nobody cares how you did in the Leaving after you get your degree, indeed many people with degrees don't have a Leaving at all.

immediately when I hear you say 'i didn't get any of my courses in the cao' it seems as though you seem drawn to the conventional CAO route to college - i'd say do the repeat year, it will fly by.

I did the interview for a plc but decided to repeat, best thing I ever did! My friend did a PLC for the year and now is hoping for offers from CAO but she didn't get anything in the post today so she is stuck. Doesn't know what to do now to get her course. Repeat is what I'd deem as the best option. Seriously, if your school offers after school study, do it for the year. I gained 65 points out of doing all my homework every evening in study.

Go onto www.qualifax.ie and look for FETACs that interest you, see if the institute offering the FETAC has any links with colleges/ITs which might be an advantage. Also check out which colleges/ITs accept FETAC students and for which courses.

I was in this boat last year and as another boards user said,
i realized myself i was not going to be clever enough to get the points so i did a FETAC course and it was the best thing ever (i realized i HATED science) but i used it, with my points from last year and between the 2 i would have been offered any course i applied for yepie.

If you think repeating is better for you, then it probably is, you know yourself better than anyone here does, but fetac courses are the biz.

Now if you, like me did a good leaving, but a not good enough, you might be damn bored with a PLC.

Repeating can be the right option. I did fairly damn poor first time around, I could have done a level 6 out in Tallaght but the IT was very far away and it wasn't a course I was very interested in. So I decided to repeat, granted in an expensive school but still. Got all my study/homework done before 7pm, had newer easier classes, no Irish or English or Biology and got 90 points more.

My point is I was dead set against repeating, especially with dyslexia, but I did, got my results and was up 90 from mostly saying to myself I'm not wasting another year while my mates were in college having a great time. It's a tough year, a long year but can be very rewarding. Plus I met some really nice people too. It's noway near as bad as you'd think.

I think ill repeat, honestly I did no work no homework or study all year so I was expecting dreadful results but this is the kick up the arse i need, however I honesstly don't think ill get back into my old school as i was nothing but trouble there got suspended, gave teachers hell etc.. And no way I can afford a big fancy grind school, any chance of grants tog et into one??
