Dog keeps escaping

My sister has a yorkie. Anytime he is let out, he races off out of the garden (its not got a side fence), and rambles around the area until found. He has only started doing this recently – they reckon its when I brought my dog up and she was just going into heat, they think this set him off – anyway is there anyway to train him not to leave the back garden or is this impossible?? He isnt neutered but they are going to get this done. He is just over a year old. He gets treated very well, and if he hasn’t been found by someone he can make his way home, but they live on a very busy road and its only a matter of time before he slips out and gets knocked down. Its easy to say make sure he doesn’t get out in the first place, but anyone who has a dog will know its easy to take ur eye off them for just a minute and they are gone. So any suggestions??

    FENCE

    The only thing that works

Why are they waiting for the dog to be knocked down, get them to stick a fence up and not let the door outside without being on a lead until they have done it. If he's not neutered they should get that done to stop him wandering looking for females however that won't stop him walking out of the garden if there is no fence he will keep doing it of course.

Electric dog fence with receiver in coller. Brillant job

With those elec. fences you have to train the dog also it's probably cheaper to just fence the area off with fence panels or timber posts and wire as it's small dog 4 or 5 foot fence would be fine. Lot of stories coming out of the bettery going or the dogs running off after something with the elec. collars they aren't as reliable as a solid fence.

get a fence and take him for regular walks so he isn't bursting to escape!
a simple picked fence or post and mesh fence should be sufficient to keep a yorkie in as long as he isn't a climber.
electric collars are un-reliable. until the garden is 100% secure he shouldn't be let out, it is only a matter of time before he is killed on the road if your sister doesn't put a fence up.
