    Hi there :)

My question isnt directly related to this particular IT, but to Letterkenny IT as well (since they dont have a forum, not that I can see)

Anyhoo, I've been told that the Applied Computing course in Letterkenny isnt good, that I wont learn very much at all. I find this hard to believe looking down through the list of subjects: http://www.lyit.ie/courses/computing/BS_Aplied_Computing_LY708.html

I'd presume that the applied computing course here in Waterford is pretty much the same. Is anyone on the Applied Computing course here in waterford, and can you tell me some things about it, job prospects etc? I'm quite worried now, as I sorta had my heart on Letterkenny but dont want to be wasting my time either.

    Thanks.

Sully is doing that course as are a few other people on this forum. I am sure he will be along soon enough to tell you about it.

I do believe it has quite a good reputation down here though ;) .

Also there is an extensive thread covering the course here

I'm in said course and even though i may not be as well regarded as sully by christophicus i'll give you my two cents.

The course is a very challenging course as a whole. In the first two semesters you will have about 3 modules out of 12 that you will be required to complete that you will find a complete waste of time because of there non relevance to IT such as thinking skills. These modules though are easy and can be enjoyed and offer a good chance to integrate into teams working on projects with your coursemates.

Waterford IT's applied computing is a four year course where you learn most aspects of the computing industry and it offers some very interesting streams that one can choose to specialise in.

The course offers all learning aspects from web development, java programming, data modelling concepts, UML, object orientated design.

It also offers specialist streams such as Forensics, Embedded Systems, Gaming, Networking among others.

The course is challenging and definitely isn't for the faint hearted. It does suffer a high dropout rate due to the amount of work needed to pass modules. Projects come hard and fast and often things will be stressful but the projects really do serve to help you learn more.

I have to say i find the couse interesting and i think anyone who does the course stands to learn a great deal about the IT industry as a whole as most of it is covered in our course. On personal experience i would recommend the course if you are 100% dedicated to it, as it can be stressful at times but definitely worth it.Obviously i don't know the standard of letterkenny so i cannot compare.

Regarding Job opportunites recent news reports say that there is a growing need for IT graduates and upon graduating from our course you could easily slot into most vacanies the industry.

There is a discussion topic on this course already... and id rather not start a new one to avoid confusion :)

I think there is a general education forum if a college doesnt have its own forum on Boards, so ill move it to there. Feel free to use the other topic on any questions on the course in WIT!
