€4000 Budget!

Hey everyone. I have a budget of €4000 and not a penny more to buy something. I really want an A6 or something similar. I've found a few south and a few more in the north. I'm looking at the 1.9 tdi. Has anyone noticed any problems with this car or does anyone have any suggestions to sway me from the A6? A '99 A6 in the north will run about €3000 with VRT of about €800. Pretty high mileage though... Economy is a big thing for me too as I'm in sales and do about 500 miles per week. I'm open to any suggestions but I'm (foolishly) looking for something a bit prestige....? Anyhoo I'd love it if you could post some replies. What would you go for? Remember... Prestige (if possible), economy, BUDGET. NO KIA OR CHEVVIES!! you get my drift....

Firstly, paragraphs and punctuation are your friends.

Secondly, the 1.9 lump is too small for the A6.

I saw and replied to that thread. My budget is €4000 though. Not a whole lot. Hopefully enough for something decent.
I have driven the 1.9 A6 and though it is a bit slow on overtaking it is very good on fuel. Economy is important to me and the A6 returns about 45 mpg while being a large car.

The Saab is nice but it might be a little smaller than I was looking for. I have heard of expensive repairs etc. I might be wrong though. But thank you. I do like saab's!! Fod for thought.

The nissan maxima that i saw in "cheap barge" thread is the kind of idea i was looking for..... Thanks for the link. I thought he only had a couple of grand budget.

firstly the 1.9 tdi engine is used throughout the vag range golf, bora, etc. So parts etc will be alright

although if economy is a priority maybe the diesel in a smaller car

Id say sit in and have a look at anything you can afford(within reason)A6 is a strong car and when you sit into a nissan after it does feel kinda light the maxima might be different though

Just make sure you get a well looked after 1.9TDI, the repair bills can get quite expensive if you buy one that has a bad Turbo, drinking oil or bad suspension especially the front end. Although they will go for ever once given plenty of TLC and correct service intervals.

Thanks for your replies. I'm actually considering going to the north for something now. I have seen a few Passat's and mondeos up there for tiny money. I could get the 2.0 zetec mondeo 2001 for about €2700 with €1200 VRT. Might take a trip up!!
