My last one was 6.3 I was worried when it went upto 6.7

I'm working away from home and my diet is not very varied, protein/ and fruit/cakes for energy, and fish n chips, curries and naans etc.

I've been feeling nauseous a lot latley, and i just put it down to my diabetes type 2. I went to the doc today and told him all my symptons and he reckons I've got diverticulitus, he made me yell when he poked my lower abdomen its very painful,

Its self inflicted really as I am eating nowhere near the right amount of fibre, so I've got to eat vegetables aarrgh.

I'm on 5mg of Folic Acid and I can't say I notice any side effects

Linwoods range is your friend, centre one best for fibre.

I'm off to do a little dance around the office now.

New results just in...63 in the new IFCC (mmol/mol) scale, which equates to 7.9 in old money.

It's a bit of a move back from the last test but can't be too annoyed with myself. Did just get diagnosed with hypothyroidism today as well, so staring on some new pills now but that should help improve my mood and therefore energy to keep up with the training if nothing else. Only other thing that the diabetes nurse commented on was that my "bad" cholesterol was a bit high, but they didn't care about that because my "good" stuff was very good.

I have had thyroid issues most of my life (from age 4) and got diabetes when 10, it is not that bad. I find that testing helps with the blood sugars but it is very difficult, especially around Christmas. Hope that you and yours had a good Christmas.

Happy New Year to everyone on here !!

Jut got my latest hba1c its gone back up to 6.7, thats the problem werking away, I'm leaving the B&B for a house share so I hope to have a better diet instead of eating crap out all of the time.

I've had a dicky tummy for a good few months now, my oh said tell the doc, I thought it was the glucofart, but he reckons i got diverticulitus, so i've gott to go for a colonoscopy, not looking forward to that.

On diabetes.co.uk there is a lot of info on the 600 cal diet thats supposed to cure diabetes t 2, i couldn't imagine being able to do anything on that diet

Well got back from the clinic on Tuesday... bad news her hba1c was 11%. She was there for 3 hours spoke to a doctor for about 5 mins she was supposed to see the consultant but there was no sign of her file, it must be 4 inches thick and they were looking for 3 hours for it, in the end we left as consultant wouldn't see her without her file.

    arggggghhhhhhhh......

Not back again until april, they increased her insulin by 1 unit FFS as if 1 unit is going to have any effect.

she is 48kgs (not overweight for her height of 159cm) and is taking 46 units of humulin M3, 19 units of humilin s and 23 units of humulin I...

Altogether 88 units of insulin nearly 2 units per kg in weight the norm is 1 unit per kg in weight for a child/teen.

We got a freebie of a bayer usb monitor so shes going to map her blood sugars on her laptop... Shes not happy with her blood sugars and says she wants to improve them. It would be great if she could stop eating but she is hungry all the time.

She got strep throat 3 weeks ago and that had a hugh effect on her blood sugars, its a constant battle between food/sickness and hormones.... not good not good...

*my husband is being tested for coeliac disease as he has a dicky bowel, has to have a colonoscopy as well due to having cancer 3 years ago.

It'll get better! Sending you lots of support via internet.

Sorry to hear you feel so let down, any chance you could ring up and get a meeting with a nurse just to talk through adjusting her insulin at home, I'm quite surprised they haven't went through it with you, maybe they are worried its early days.

Could phone the nurse but if they cant find her file then there's nothing she can do.

Im going to take it each day at a time, her blood sugars werent too bad yesterday, if she comes in good before bed her morning ones are good, if they are bad before bed they stay bad.

If they were that concerned they would have phone me after we left. Limerick is a joke.... What a fantastic support system they have!

    NOT!

We will get there in the end, its just very frustrating.

Thats shocking, mine used to look at my book and tell me there and then after a chat. That said she had the file nearby if needs be but she never had to look.

Still can't believe they couldn't find her file.

Happened to my dad in the uk, they lost his file and that was about 10 inch's think, he had a condition they forgot about and it attacked his kidneys, (he was in and out of hospital) when he went into kidney failure at home and needed by daily dialysis, only then did they realise what was going on and it was too late. The damage was done, he died 4 months later from a massive hemorrhage of the portal vein.

    Head wreaking.

They wouldn't need a file to adjust her day to day doses. The diabetes nurse specialist should be able to guide you if you read out your daughter's BS readings to her.

One of the other Limerick parents set up a facebook page where you might be able to find out more about how they operate in the Regional. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=747796000&ref=name#!/groups/202232116520226/

I personally have not heard anything possitive relating to any of the diabetic clinics in Limerick (adult or child).

We were in crumlin and they transfered us back to limericks. It's a shambles, I hagrn't heard any good stories either, thinking if going private in Galway. I think they have a teen's clinic in Galway too. I also don't like the idea of her being moved to adult diabetes at 16 in limerick, at least we still get to go to crumlin in June and December.

Asked to join the Facebook group.

    Thanks.

I've just clicked who you are, betting we live in the same town :) your user name makes sense now....

6.6 - very pleased I managed to get it to that over the christmas with *ahem* one or two beers and indulgent meals.

I don't know how much longer my finger tips can cope with the increased testing regime though...

Test at the sides of your finger to save them...that is what I was told to do.

That is what I'm doing alright but with the cold weather it's getting to the stage where they are looking very battered. Hopefully we'll see some warmer weather...

I don't do that (was diagnosed as a child and have more than a few bad habits). I've been told to stop using the tips several times but never really went with it.

Am I actually damaging my fingers or is it just a comfort thing?

I was diagnosed when I was 10 - 27 years ago on Monday and I have the same bad habits. The wonderful nurses in Holles Street got me to save my fingers when I was having my babies!

Wee chap was in special care for 2 days for his lungs and he had one low bs, thankfully his bs were perfect after this. Mum and baby got home after 6 days and we are both doing great!:D

Alot of hospitals used to (and still do) get the hba1c done with the general blood work (upto a fortnight). Your can get a reasonably accurate hba1c result from a sample in 3 minutes or less (we have one in our lab) with the right equipment. I know Crumlin had the ability when I left but alot of hospitals just don't.

Excellent spot, you may have missed Marie and Nell who both have retired this year apparently, they were awesome, if those who take over from them are half as good, you are in excellent hands.

  • Registered Users Posts: 593 ✭✭✭triona1

Our gp is married to nell!!!
We self diagnosed Andrew with my mother in law's test,He was 26.4 when we got to the hospital he also had 4.3 keytones. And Nell was the first nurse we met with and i seen her name badge but said nothing then she asked who was his gp and she nearly died when i told her the blood drained she actually said she could have killed him lol,She then laughed cause we had self diagnosed,My husband noticed the signs very quick they said probably only within 2 weeks Andrew had the onset of type1.
Have not met Marie but the nurses are fab still.Have not seen Nell in awhile,Not sure that she is retired but i no my gp is on a 3month holiday.

I was only diagnosed last Sunday and I got the results of my HbA1c before I left, I was 131 (I don't know what that is in old money!) over the last 3 months, it's so high it wasn't even on the scale in my monitoring diary ;)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,094 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Just found this converter, put your number into the mmol/mol box to find the number using the old scale:

    http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-units-converter.html

Bit easier than me digging out the sheet of the conversion table I was given.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,128 ✭✭✭cynder

Daughters hab1c was 10.4 down from 11. In limerick they don't have the quick read machine so we have to wait up to 3 hours for the results they dont have a dietitian, my lady is due in crumlin in June, they are trying to discharge her but she won't let them, she agreed to go twice yearly.

She likes Vincent the diabetic pyschologist dr Cody and dr costigan she didn't like Nell.

Wonder what wonders they are planning with the combined care?

Just got my latest numbers and am at 74%. :(

Was at 63% back in December so that is quite a jump in the wrong direction. Not sure how much of that I can blame on the diagnosis with hypothyroid messing me about as well, but I was expecting it to be worse. Expecting a stern talking to when back at the pump clinic about bucking my ideas up.
