    Hi guys,

Don't usually post in this forum but Im looking to buy a decent FTO so I presumed there'd be a few experts over here :)

Anyway, looking to pick up a decent one, Im 24, but Im a bit clueless when it comes to FTO's.

Most of the ones I look at are Mivec, but I have seen this FTO GX Tiptronic (automatic) on Carzone.

    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Mitsubishi/FTO/GX-Tiptronic/1155406/

Its a bit over my budget at €9,450, only have about €8k to spend... Is this a decent car at first glance? Went out to view it yesterday and it looks spotless. Mileage of 30k is questionable though...

So my question is, what should I be looking out for when looking at FTO's in general? Mivec or Tiptronic? Anything else I should know?

    Cheers!

    Rory

AFAIK colm_mcm used to own this one

Might be worth dropping him a PM. I know there was an issue with some part under the accelerator thats name escapes me now. I had a thread on this around January when I was looking.

OP, is the mileage on the one you posted genuine? Just seems a bit low for a 10yr old jap import. Miles have being know to magically disappear when you drive onto boats!

Nice car always liked them alot. Hope your happy with it!

As I said, I am suspicious of the mileage... Havent bought it yet, just looking! What would you value it at? Theres not many other FTO's on the market to compare to...

    Cheers!

    Hi roryc
The best FTO to get is the GPX manual Mivec. The GX is still a great car but you might regret not going for the 200hp version.

The best place for FTO info is here:
    http://www.fto-ireland.com/
Join the forum there and you'll get no end of info.

p.s. great choice of car - I have one :D

Try this place http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum , the guys over there should be able to answer any of your questions, 9450 sounds a bit steep for a 97 non mivec though, id have a good look around and see what you get elsewhere for that sort of money.

First thing I can recommend is not to buy here, especially carzone, you'll pick up a 97 model 2.0 manual 5 speed for under 6k.. That would mean finding one in the UK and importing it, VRT is about 1500 + about 4500 for the car itself. On the road for another 500 or so.. beats the hell out of 9,450!

See Im not really THAT pushed about getting a Mivec for insurance reasons, and the fact that there isn't that many decent ones out there. Im not mad on getting one with over 100k miles either...

cheers for the help so far lads, the FTO forum looks good

Remember the odometer on Jap imports is in km so 100,000km is only just over 62,000 miles. I think they stopped making the FTO in 2000 so the newest ones are still 8 years old.

Also the mileage many Jap imports may not be genuine so judge each car on current condition and have a good mechanic examine it.

The car in particular you are loking at is way overpriced, almost twice what its worth in reality. Remember its a near 12 year old car and its the base model non-mivec and tiptronic too. I could almost say without a shadow of doubt its got maybe half its original mileage declared on the odometer too, maybe even more scraped off.

What you ideally want is to stay away from the tiptronic, if the box has not been looked after immaculately during its lifetime it will definitely give you trouble. A good clean 2L mivec in manual is worth about 6-7k tops in todays market, the tiptronic gr/gx much less.

I wouldn't worry that much about the milage if the car has been looked after.
I suppose at 24 the insurance could be a problem - have you tried getting a quote for a GPX as well?

Best advice I can give is to keep an eye on the for-sale section on fto-ireland. You can easily get a bit of history on the car by searching for posts by the seller (it'll show if they had a lot of problems with it).
I'd say you could easily pick up a decent model for 6-7k.

If you are looking to buy from the UK then check out http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/

Another good source of info is http://www.mivec.co.uk/

9450 is a joke proces for this car, dont know an much about FTO's but i do know there shed loads in UK fro sale at very small prices, take the milage on these with a pinch of salt, it'd be better to get one that has all the required maintenance and upkeep/upgrades done, brakes timing belt major servic jobs etc
2 places well wort a look
    pistonheads.co.uk
    carandclassic.co.uk etc

    some tasty eamples

I'm 21 and drive a manual GPX, insurance is highish because I decared mods (exhaust/air filter/lowered)

High is €1.5k fully comp with 3 yrs named driving experience. The quote between a GX,GR and GPX were minor. €1.1k tpft, w/o mentioning mods.

Great car btw, got mine on http://www.fto-ireland.com/ too!

lovely cars but they can be hard to sell on just something to keep in mind.

    heheh..
Technically you're right as far as performance goes. The GPVR is lighter and has less features (e.g. no aircon) than the GPX. It also has a limited slip diff as standard afaik.
This is great news to a petrolhead but as a daily drive, I think the GPX is a better all-rounder.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,456 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That GX Tiptronic is overpriced, aim for a GP Version R or GPX.

The GPVR has a limited slip diff, HID lights, lower suspension, coloured seats, front and rear strut braces on top of GPX spec,

but the GPX gets electric folding mirrors, better sound insulation, electric folding mirrors, climate control (vs manual aircon) side skirts and front foglights, also a few improvements in the cabin.

I've had 2 GPX's and driven a few GP Version R's, and I can't say that the GPVR is noticibly faster. it's a nice package if you want a more sporty feel, but the GPX is a cracker to start with and has a bit more comfort.

There's an absolute minter of a GP Version R (Aero Edition) with loads of brilliant extras on sale on www.fto-ireland.com for €7,950. I wouldn't look any further than that.

I've owned a few of these , great cars overall ... still looks fresh and very reliable.
As mentioned earlier this one is way over priced . Granted its the facelift model ,the tip gearbox is generally less desireable so they make less that the equivelant manual .
If that car is spotless I'd reckon it would be worth €6.5 to €7k at most

Broomstick where are you getting insurance for €1.5k, I'm 22 and was looking at a buying a 2L fto about a month ago, Rang up the insurance company to get a quote on my own name with 5 years named driving experience, for a start they didn't have the fto in their database and then I got the "well we don't insure Japanese imports"

I wouldn't mind calling up whoever your with

€961 for 2.0 gpx TPF&T off the website just now,
Thats almost too cheep in a way as I got an online quote for a 00 1.8, 180-bhp vvL-i celica last week for €1600 with the exact same details

I still think there is something a little too good to be true about this as surely the fto would be in a higher bracket.

It depends on the insurance company ..some companies like Hibernian would'nt touch these cars for new business.

I think AXA are competitive enough for FTO's at the moment as well
