I guess that driver will not be making a guest appearance on Top Gear as the Stig then?

Partly amphibious at least. It seems to have ended up on the far side/bank of the canal going by those pictures. Maybe he was trying to skip it across the water much like i used to skip stones across ponds in my youth:D. Expensive test drive anyway.

Will the test driver be held liable for the damage, or would it be covered by the garage insurance?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

It's a rural road beside a canal. These roads tend to be as straight as straight can get and be several miles long.

Here it is: it's the road that crosses the middle of the picture vertically

Zoom out and you'll see just how straight it is

so is the road between carberry and derrinturn yet an mr2 took out about 200 yards of the ditch before being stopped by a tree - both roads look bumpy which can catch out a driver in a rwd car going at fair welly - car will start fishtailing - driver tries to recover by over steering and only makes things worse

Looks like the rear wheel touched the grass and turned him left abruptly..
He'll be pension age by the time its paid for if he had no insurance...

So not quite amphibious, more aspirational hovercraft then?
