Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Orientation ball is on in week zero - coincidently called orientation week. Normally only first years go, but the odd 2nd/3rd/4th year will go if they're around.

Freshers ball is on in either week 1 or 2 and all years go. The first big night of the year.

Both are ticketed events and for over 18's only.

I reckoned they were worth going to. Orientation ball was free last year... can't really remember the price of the freshers ball. It'll be cool if they have that lock and key thing again in the orientation ball.

How strict is this over 18s thing?

Very. You need to be a bar member to go to the bar in DCU. You get a special mark on your card when you're a member, and you can't join the bar until you're 18. You also need to carry passport/drivers licence/age card too.

There's lots of alcohol-free events too though, don't worry. Oh and house parties :)

That's not so bad - I had to wait until May!

    Still had fun though :-)

two forms of ID for all events. One being your student ID. It seems strict, but it's for a good reason.
What's the craic with the bars this year? The old one still out of commission?

The Orientation Ball is better than the Freshers Ball, well that was the general concensus amongst us freshers last year, it was more ad-hoc so to speak....... like you could walk up and talk to anyone and they'd be courteous in return, but by the time of the freshers ball the week after, most people had formed their friendship groups!

Go to the two if ya can, im a 2nd year as of late september but I think I might go to the orientation ball (it was that good last year), seein that its either have a mad week in dublin or sit at home doing nothing!

Ah dont be hoping for good bands for the orientation ball, itll be just some DJ playing ruby by the kaiser chiefs and other ear-wrenching **** of the like, but the freshers ball might be good, the flaws played there last year if I can remember, and the delorentos,

ah noway was hopin dey wernt gona b dat strict! guess il jus hav to meet up wit a few other underagers and hav a session elsewhere on dose 2 nights lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,787 ✭✭✭g5fd6ow0hseima

Ah no, dont be silly, I was underage for those balls, along with the halloween one too, all you do is borrow some persons student ID who looks anything like you, go in, and pass it out through the fence....

Ive seen many do it last year, seriously, you cant pass up the orientation or freshers balls, best nights of the year,

Hey. The rule is half your age plus seven.

So 18 year olds are perfectly fine. If not a little too old...

Just wondering how formal are the orientation and freshers balls, as in getting dressed up & stuff?

Nope all very casual excuse for a piss up affairs, there are only two formal balls during the year.

I read somewhere in here that they're not quite "balls", and judging from pictures from last years student magazine

I'd say what you wear on nights out at home should do!

Any DCU students feel different? =]

Ball is deceptive. It's a pissup in the bar.
