    Ugh my parents brought home a huge bag of Hersheys from New York with them and I couldn't even look at it! It's awful.

    Hershey's is made with slightly soured milk, which improves its shelf life or something. This is what gives it the distinctive, and quite disgusting, taste. As Hershey's became the dominant chocolate maker in the States, people came to expect their chocolate to have a slightly soured taste, and consequently many American chocolate manufacturers use soured milk in production.
