The difference is because they charge you in Sterling and not in euro, they obviously have a very optimistic conversion rate.

That explains it, i just canceled my order (they had no stock) which was supposed to be €649 and thats what i authorised but they took €680 from the account.....i just hope they refund me the correct amount, i never want to have to call them again.

Don't want to put a downer on things but I am pretty sure they will be refunding in Sterling and the conversion will knock that out of wack as well. Might be wrong but it happened to a customer of ours that used a UK credit card and got refunded, it was short due to the conversion so we sent him a cheque for the balance.

Bought two laptops from them in the last couple of months. Found them good to deal with. Laptops were very good models and as such, the price was far cheaper than the in-store Irish price. Rang customer service to change the tel. number on one of the orders. The lady was pleasant and helpful. They also did a security check which was swift and did not delay order processing. Delivery was 3 maybe 4 days. Actually grand from start to finish. Couldn't fault them.

Just shows it depends who you get to talk to. Would be advisable to take her name and talk to her again in the future if you've any furthe issues.

The prices may be cheap, but the company is a joke. Would never buy off them again, still dealing with an Asus eee that i bought of them, problem arose in august, still not fixed. Awful awful company, would avoid like the plague

I ordered a laptop off them last Thursday (the 9th) and no sign of it yet. I checked the order status online and it says that my order has not been dispatched yet which is a total joke considering that money left my credit card two days after I ordered it.

I also got roped into paying for them to check the pixels etc which is a total rip off  Plus I've got until Monday to apply for the £50 cash back offer that they are running at the moment. Doubt I'll ever see that at this rate :(

Well I finally got through to them after ringing around 4 different numbers (their customer service number in Ireland is an 087 mobile number ) and they said they would check my order status and get back to me. They never got back to me but I got an email saying that my order has finally been dispatched (a full 8 days after I ordered & paid for it).

Absolute joke of a company! Touch wood that nothing happens to the laptop because I would hate to have to deal with these cowboys ever again.

With any luck you will never have a bother with the machine and never have to deal with them after this.

I've ordered from them twice, several years apart for different things (most recently an Eee PC 1000) and I've had no difficulties at all.

As another poster mentioned, cheap laptops = cost costs and this is always on the customer service side first. So if you have problems with delivery or technical issue then you may run in to difficulties.

All that said, the company that I have consistently had the most service problems with over the last 15 years has been Dell. They have failed to deliver at all levels of sales and support from consumer through to on site corporate support. They always get something wrong, sometimes minor and other times major. Whether it's missing components, incorrect spec., deliveries vanishing into the ether, needlessly arguing trivial technical issues.. you name it.

You might not need to reinstall vista. Try doing these first.

I have ordered my Samsung NC10 on Monday, yesterday I have received the delivery. No complaints (so far). 1 day delivery - not bad.

Lads, has anyone successfully ordered off laptopsdirect using an Irish Laser/Maestro card?? Apparently Irish and UK maestro are different but seeing as laptopsdirect.ie is supposed to be their Irish site, they might accept an Irish maestro card??

Its just after running into a few problems last time i was hoping i could avoid them by using Maestro instead of Visa

Irish Laser cards generally wont work outside of Ireland, despite being maestro cards. And Laptopsdirect, despite having a .ie domain, are an English company.

Yup, you better off using Credit Card or you'll end up with problems. English company also and thats where your laptop comes from.

Ordered a TH42PZ81B from laptopsdirect.ie after some initial problems with their ordering system they took my order and assured me the order would be delivered in two days :D. Received confirmation email:D. After a day when their website still said my order had not been dispatched:confused:. I used their eMessaging system (as they recommended) and after three requests for information I was assured that the order was dispatched they also included information of how to track my order through the transportation company (which can only be checked by phone). Called the transportation company who said they never received the order:(. Called laptopsdirect.ie through the Irish number, to be informed that even though laptopsdirect.ie list plenty of 42 inch (and bigger) TVs that they could not deliver anything greater than 37 inch to the Republic. They admitted that they should never have taken the order  . They then offered to let me change my order, which I declined and then said that they would have to cancel my order. I received a confirmation of the cancelation by email. A day later I found out that they still went ahead and charged my credit card company . I have been on to my credit card company and they have told me to try to resolve the issue with laptopsdirect.ie directly if this fails they will then get involved. I will not be returning to laptopsdirect.ie with my cash EVER again .

Just checked www.samsyerman.co.uk and they don't seem to supply the TH42PZ81B that I'm looking for. Again I'm waiting on richersounds to get more stock in, the search continues.

I ordered a laptop from them on saturday night. I thought they looked like a good company. Freakin out a bit now after reading this thread. Haven't heard anything from them yet but it is only monday morning. I'll be keeping an eye on the tracking with my fingers crossed.

You should be okay, they are usually okay dispatching stuff, it's only when things go wrong and you need to send stuff back is when the problems start.

There was a small article pimping them in the Sunday Business Post yesterday. Only mentioned prices not the appalling customer service they provide. Good luck with the laptop phi3. With any luck you will never have to deal with Laptops Direct after that and you will be grand.

Well all good with mine so far (samsung x22)
I got them to check and install everything before sending it out. So that delays it a few days.
Ordered it Saturday night. It arrived Friday morning.

Regardless of how dodgy laptopsdirect might be, the Asus N10 is 60 lids cheaper on their website than elara's...a lot of people will risk it for that sorta saving i think

The price is only one part of owning the laptop.

I purchased an IBM laptop from Laptopsdirect.ie three years ago. I have never had to contact them since, therefore, my experience was positive with them.

However, when I moderated this forum, I had to ban several Laptopsdirect.ie shill accounts, all pretending to be satisfied customers.

Plus, I don't beleive anyone here has gone on record as having a positive experience of their after-sales support. There have been tales long delays getting a response, never mind getting something done about laptops that were not working.

So, if all goes well and you have no reason to contact them, it will be a positive experience. However, how to you quantify the cost of incompetent and dis-insterested support staff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Yup you're betting a 60 euro saving on not having problems. It's actually more than that if the free delivery applies to Ireland.

    /shill :pac:

Wow... there was me thinking I was the only one... I ordered a laptop off them before Christmas (around the 16th Dec) and it arrived within 3 working days, which is all fine and dandy. It was a great machine for the price 1gb nvidia card subwoofer and everything, pretty cheap compared to other companies. With excitement and glee in my eyes, I unpacked it all, plugged it in, opened it up, turned it on... then i thought... hey what a weird screen saver... looked back a bit and realised the screen was cracked all down the right hand side :(

To my utter disappointment I rang them up... At first they where useful, Customer service sent me an email showing me the returns form, so I filled it out and sent it off. The next morning I rang up to see if it went through, they said they never received it, so I asked for it to be collected, they said they will sort it out and sent me a message saying they will look into it now... 2 days later I rang up again... yet again... nope no record (I start to get annoyed here) So I asked them again, can you get it collected ASAP as this was a Christmas present and I would like a refund, same answer again, ok it will be done :P gave me a delivery date 23rd dec

So... as you can guess it didn't get collected... 2-3 phone calls and email later, got the date 30th... nope... 2nd Jan.. Another phone call... 7th Jan.. Finally got collected and still waiting on the refund.

Well to sum up, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone; the hassle is not worth the amount of money saved.

The latest update was, when they lodged the money back to my credit card with the falling pound (£) I was out of pocket by 40 Euro. Laptopsdirect.ie said this was not there problem and were quite ignorant about it, I must also admit to been quite annoyed which probably didn’t help. I contacted the credit card company how said they were in violation and to apply in writing to the credit card company stating "Due to the merchant processing the transaction in error I have suffered a finance loss as a direct result of the violation of these regulations”
This was a lot of work considering I’ve got nothing to show for it, bar a headache. STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

Em I just counted up mine there too from L.D. Just making sure, did you include the currency conversion fee? that might of brought it up. Well at least your one step ahead of me and actually have some sort of refund :(

Well, honestly, thank you as I know what to do next if the same thing happens to me (more than likely it will :P ) I didn't think a company could honestly be this bad with customer service. I had 1-2 phone calls that where actually polite and helpful out of...15+ phone calls and emails.

  • Registered Users Posts: 53 ✭✭GadgetGeek

Best of Luck and thank God for the credit card assurance.

I had one bought for me last week as a surprise (A Toshiba Satellite Pro A300-1NH - T5870 2.0/3GB/250GB /15.4" WXGA Trubrite®/VBus/GM45/DVD-SMDL/11agn/1.3Mp Cam) This is what it says on the email. It should be arriving today.

Had an issue or two already as when I was checking the tracking order it suddenly appeared as being refunded. I contacted them and asked why as I didn't ask for the refund and was then told it was a staff error.

Then I had a direct marketing call trying to sell me a case for it, anti virus & insurance against dead pixels. When I declined the operator started to push a hard sale, telling me that Norton & Mc Affee were rubbish & that dead pixels were not covered under warranty (unless there were five or more).

Then when the order showed the item despatched, it actually was not with the courier. The courier stated that this was the norm & they had this problem quite regularly.

So, after skimping through this thread, I now await with baited breath.....

While I'm here, is it possible to buy an in car charger for a laptop & if so what would be a reasonable price? Thanks.

Well that really puts the ability of there customer service in question or were they telling porkie pies. Either way they returned most of the money and caused a lot of hassle. Was your purchase recent?

Yes. I ordered it on Wednesday Jan 7 and it arrived to my house on Friday Jan 9. I also ordered a stand and it was delivered at the same time (boxed seperately). The delivery was actually at around 2030 so the guy must have been working overtime...
They sound a bit like Ryanair, when it goes right the service works well, but when it goes wrong, it goes horribly wrong...

I've read the reviews on this post and they would cause concern and I did hesitate before finally pulling the trigger and ordering from Laptopsdirect. I ordered a TH42PZ81B plasma and stand on Monday 12th and it arrived yesterday morning. All I can say is that when their service works it works! I've had no problems, the price was good and I can have no complaints about the entire experience. I would use them again and I would recommend them but with the warning that if you do need to go down the road of refunds and returns, it may be a long and frustrating experience - based on the comments here.

I ordered this on Tuesday (13/01/09)
    http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Asus_X59GL-AP007C_15.4-_Laptop_X59GL-AP007C/version.asp

When I made the order it was saying they were in stock and I paid for 1-2 days delivery.

No sign of it today so Checked my email and had not received an email confirming it had been dispatched so rang the company.

Asked what the story to customer service, saying it said they were in stock when I ordered and I paid for a 2 day delivery and it hasn't arrived.

I was told it hadn't arrived into their warehouse and they were expecting it today, I should have it Monday. I'm only after taking a shop to the small claims court (and won) and don't want the hassle again. I need the laptop for next weekend.

So if it's not here on Monday, how hard would it be to cancel the order (they already took the money off the visa card) and get a refund? anyone know or know where I can find out?

When I was told it would be here on Monday, I asked for the customer service guys name (Simon). He wouldn't give me his last name. I hope beyond hope I've no problems with this order.

    Any help/advice much appreciated
