    Ronny,

Whats the story with COMPsci wifi?
The story as far as I know it is that it is accessible to students as well as staff (at least I know of plenty of people who seem to have decent quality signal to some network around the hamilton and LG12).
Having never used it myself (cos I was never arsed and only had an inspiron 9100 at the time, which was far too heavy to be considered a laptop), I'm not sure what logons to use/ how to get set up with access. crash_000 should be able to provide more info when he returns from his travels.

Bump, I'm quite interested as well, don't see anything saying that students can't use it

There are actually two CS networks, one of which is only for PG's and staff, while the other is accessible to all CS students. Ask someone in the CS labs, they should be able to run you through it - cant quite remember the exact config stuff for it.

As for TCDWifi, Boston is partially right as to why its **** in the lecture theatres - concrete tends to attentuate signals in the 2.4ghz spectrum, but as well the AP's that are used for TCDwifi are quite old B routers, some of which are in the lecture theatres. On top of this, many laptops are actually poorly designed for wireless, in that the aerials are generally placed based on space concerns rather than greater signal reception (my old dell d400 was fantastic for signal reception, due to aerial placement - far better than my new laptop).

    Theres my brief rundown.

PS: oh, i'm back by the way. I'm not being a saddo and posting on holidays. Ireland sucks after travelling for so long. It rains here.

Ah not much - debating when I have to start entering "unemployed" as job status instead of "student" on stuff ;) the job hunt begins!

I did Engineering and we were never allowed access to the CS network - which was a bit annyoing cause TCDwifi tends to be rather ****e in the cs labs (never had a problem with it in the hamilton lecture theatres though).

When I asked about getting access to the network I was told that only final year CS and staff/postgrads get access. Don't know if thats changed this year but seemed to be the case last year as no one i knew in third year cs could use it.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense based on what I've seen

    [Back on topic :pac:]

www.dell.ie/tcd is now active, and leads to a page offering three laptops. I presume they're the same ones that are in the UCDD offer, but what's strange is you don't have to log in to access them. Or give any proof whatsoever that you're a Trinity student, as far as I can tell.

Would you recommend purchasing now or seeing what is said during Freshers' Week? Also, I'm noticing how restrictive the options inside of the offers are... I mean they're cheap, but there's not much room for choosing exactly what you want.

They're significantly better than previous deals - however if you're looking for a higher spec laptop, check out www.dell.ie/outlet , i've always bought my laptops there, they've been cheaper and better spec'ed than most of the deals like that.
