franchise team for the british league

    In order to improve the standard of play in ireland is there a market for a professional franchise team to be entered into the british league.

    The funds needed to travel to away games in the BBL would be prohibitively expensive for current clubs. Someone would need to come in with a bucket load of cash from somewhere.

    If cash weren't a problem, you'd probably only have 3 big enough markets for it IMHO - Dublin, Belfast & Cork. People will go on about Dublin clubs not being well supported, but the fact is that the general availability of quality players is found mostly in larger cities. Large cities are more attractive for professional players and are better serviced with airports for travel of the nature required.

    The Scottish Rocks survive quite well in the BBL and they feed off Scottish based players quite nicely. There's been quite a few of the top Scottish players who play there. Saying that, they're not a plane journey away and BBL clubs would have to commit to playing away games in whatever city was chosen.

    I think it'd be a great idea, _but_ the problem is getting someone with the impetus & vision to do it right and the cash to make it a possibility. Also, getting buy in from Basketball Ireland to use their facilities might also pose a problem. It's an interesting proposition, & I know it's been mooted before (no more than a Premiership / Championship football club based in Dublin) but the reality makes it very difficult. Belfast might be the ideal location for it to be honest.
