I am trying to track down the first name of a Sligo man who played in the very first football game for Celtic in Glasgow in 1888. His surname was Gorevin and his initial is listed as H.

We've tried the Glasgow census of 1881 and 1891 to no avail. Does anyone have a long gone relative named Gorevin who played a unique part in Celtic's history?

    Goal Michael Dolan (Drumpellier)

Right back Eddie Pearson (Carfin Shamrock)
Left back J McLaughlin (Govan Whitefield)

    Right half-back Willie Maley (Cathcart)
    Centre half-back James Kelly (Renton)
    Left half-back Phil Murray (Blantyre)

    O.R. Neil McCallum (Renton)
    I.R. T.E.Maley (Cathcart)
    Centre John Madden (Dumbarton)
    I.L. M.Dunbar (Edinburgh Hibs)
    O.L. H. Gorevin (Govan Whitefield)

I had no idea! Thought only Brother Walfrid was involved back then!
Interested to see what answers you get back on this.

I did a long google search because I was curious. There's lots about brother wilfrid but not about H Gorevin. Except H Gorevin! Couldn't find his first name anywhere.

    Just a thought.

Have you tried the name 'Gorevan' rather than 'Gorevin'.
'Gorevan' is a popular Sligo name. I never heard the name 'Gorevin'.
There could have been a spelling error along the way.

Ok might be an idea to search for him in relation to hibs rather than Celtic:
    http://www.hibsstats.co.uk/season%201887-88.html
He appears twice on this page.

    Good luck

I asked my Celtic/Sligo obsessive friend, but no joy.

Thanks Gillie, yes we were aware of the Hibs connection but frustratingly he is listed in Hibs records either by his surname or the H. Gorevin.

    Thanks for asking sueme

    Hi John

Sadly no, as I've stated earlier its driving several fans websites crazy trying to identify the man. Wow on the surname, do you have access to the sligo registrar of births on line, I imagine circa 1871 census he would he a young boy.
