I drive a Ford Cougar and found out to my cost that there was an american one that is totally different. Of course I had to have bought parts to learn that  There is a differently badged one all right but there is one from the eighties that is totally different.

it looks pretty similar to me, although I believe the engine lineup in the States is different. i.e they're bigger!

Chevrolet Nova / Vauxhall Nova (which is odd, as they're both GM?)

Mercury is a division of Ford, though I think the original Cougar was only ever badged as a Mercury, the Ford Cougar on this side of the Atlantic was a rebadged 10th gen Merc.

Ahhh, I dunno. It's still the same nameplate from the same manufacturer. Granted, the body styles are very different, but it's a bit like trying to get points for http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/40/First_Generation_Toyota_Corolla.jpg and http://www.whatcar.com/Car/Toyota/8114455732.jpg

As for my contribution, Ford Sierra and GMC Sierra.

Ford Fusion - one is based on a Fiesta, the other is based on the Mazda6.

    Ford 500(though it's actually spelt Ford Five Hundred)/FIAT 500/FIAT Cinquecento(Cinquecento is Italian for 500)

Similarly the FIAT Sedici and Renault 16(Sedici is Italian for 16).

Chevrolet/Holden/Opel/Vauxhall Vectra(though the latest Chevrolet Vectra is a Brazilian market Astra with a stretched wheelbase, the others are all the same car at one stage or another)
