You're probably on your own there. Seriously though, I don't really remember him. Enlighten me. Was he a full back by any chance?

Roscommon have undoubtedly had a few players who would warrant consideration but people mightn't remember them as easily because Roscommon haven't featured in many finals or even semis.

Tony McManus was a classy player, as was Dermot Early. Derek Duggan was an outstanding talent who would have got on any team in the country.
I hadn't read this until I seen it quoted after I posted my team which includes Harry Keegan. Without doubt the best corner back I ever seen.
As far as the other Roscommon players are concerned. I mentioned Dermot Earley as one of those that would be close. I think Tony McManus failed to produce in Croke Park all too often so thats why he would not make my team. As for Derek Duggan, he had one great season but lost his way very quickly. Interestingly Mick O'Dwyer has stated that he believes that Roscommon team should have beaten them in 1980.

I wasnt around either, but watched a few tapes of the 1979-1980 era, definetly the best corner back of his era, along with a few other brilliant individuals on that team like Pat Lindsay, Gerry Connellan etc...

(not being bias, but that roscommon team of the late 70s doesnt get the praise it deserves, I feel they were a close 2nd to kerry for those years)
I don't agree with your last bit. In fairness the Dublin team that won the two preceding All Irelands to Kerry were the second best team for most of the late seventies. Iirc Roscommon lost to Armagh in the semi final in '77, and that team was hammered by Dublin in the final. They lost to Dublin in the '79 semi final.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Tony Keady at CB for the hurling.

Was immense. And would have been even more had he not been shafted in one of the worst treatments of a player in the history of the game.

I did! I can't think of a better centre back in my lifetime. He was hard as concrete and skilful with it. A real warrior of the sort that Galway just don't seem to have at the moment.

What they did to him in 89 was terrible alright. He spoke about it on Laochra Gael and you could tell that it still rankles with him.

Without a doubt they should. Watched that on tg4 one night and Roscommon blew it.

Monaghan where very close that day, Mayo drew with Dublin that year too, John Finn got his jaw broken from an "accidental elbow"!

Padraic Brogan hit the high point of his career that day with a brilliant goal against the Dubs

And he hit his low point in the 92 Semi! The Wee Man showed him what he thought of him for saying he had more chance of winning an AI with Mayo rather than Donegal! :D

The 1977 semi was thrown away, look at the 45 in the drawn game

I dont think the most avid dub fan would say that Dublin would have hammered their way home in the 1977 final if Roscommon had been their opposition in that game.

Yeah - 1979, a 1 point loss, heartbreaking, on another day it could have gone the other way (same goes for 1980 I suppose)

didn't roscommon miss a sitter of a goal chance that day, o'gara i think. thank god for tg4 gold, back when huge banners were allowed in croker, the auld fella use to get them made up (galway hurler fan and rossie in football, time when croker was a regular visit in the 1970-1980's) any way the flag is clearly to be seen on camera in the hill. embarrasing thing was in the 1990's when the flags were put out the window coming up to the weekend of a match, he would put it out, much to the bemusement of a note so hardcore gaa neighbour hood. picture of danny murrary (another legand) keegan and someone else with sam macguire painted on.

pitty the banners are a big no no now, there use to be some funny slogans and designs created

Given that I have always thought of him as the greatest player of my lifetime, I'm surprised Matt Connor does not appear on more lists. Only the Gooch or Sheehy would compare IMHO.

I know this is a zombie thread, but I have time to myself so I had a go.

    First Kerry game in 95

    1) Cluxton
    2) Marc Ó Sé
    3) Darran Fay
    4) Mike McCarthy
    5) Tomás Ó Sé
    6) Séamus Moynihan
    7) Seán Óg De Paor

    12) Michael Donnellan
    13) Canavan

Tough Calls: S. McDonald, S. Cavanagh, C. McDonald, Phillip Jordan, John O'Leary, K. McGeeney, Brian Dooher, B + A Brogan, MF Russell (+ many more i've no doubt forgotten)

Obviously, I would have seen a lot more of Kerry players, so I have a lot of them in, but it would have been some team if they got to line out together,

    Joyce,No

I'd have Canavan, Joyce and McDonnell over Mike Frank Russell, though he was obviously a talented and likeable footballer. He faded a bit in the second half of his career considering he only turned 25 in 2002.

19 year old kerryman, gonna be tough to look away from home here,do my best though,

    stephen cluxton

    marc o se
    ryan mcmenamin
    karl lacey

    tomas o se
    seamus moynihan
    emmett bolton

    dara o se
    sean cavanagh

    alan brogan
    colm cooper
    declan o sullivan

    ciaran sheahan
    michael murphy
    michael meehan

    6 kerrymen,2 dubs, 2 tyrone, 2 donegal,1 cork,1 galway, 1 kildare.

    harder than it looks,
no question about a keeper who has set new standards,
    solid fullback line,
really rate bolton as a player.other 2 best half backs in country by far
whelan, aidan o se,and aidan walsh unlucky to miss out in the middle, the latter 2 will only improve
exceptionally skillful half forward line, no room for modern workhorses
meehan a class act, murphy set to be a great and ciaran sheahan the most natural footballer i have seen in a long time, love watching him

Any football team without the Gooch is plain wrong .. one of the greatest if not the greatest forward ever !

Lots of great players on all the teams but none that should deny gooch a place

    Obviously imho

All superb Matt Connor especially ..I still think for sheer natural talent and finishing ability Gooch has few if any competitors but obviously everyone has their own view

    Oh dear, no :o

None of these 3 should be near it!

Oh right I see your age in fairness! I'd have Gallagher, MDMA, Nicholas Murphy, maybe even Shane Ryan ahead of all these. Did you see any of Tohill/ McGrane? Aidan O'Se has only been anyway good for 2 years now, and Walsh is solid at best IMO.

    Always found Whelan incredibly overrated

As a 44 year old I can't believe that people are leaving out Bob o Malley from, the meath team of the late 80s /early 90s, a class intelligent corner back , 3 Allstars ,texaco player of the year and captained a comprise rules team to Australia. Also Martin o Connell , a brilliant half back who walked onto the millennium team, who no one has considered.

    J**us this is difficult

    S Cluxton
    Paidi O S
    J O Keeffe
    B O Malley
    Tomas O S
    S Moynihan
    Martin O Connell
    Dara O S
    Jack O S
    P Spillane
    Matt Connor
    M Fitz
    Gooch
    P Canavan
    M Sheehy

I could keep picking all night!
I know it looks a little biased and leans towards less modern times but I can,t find better footballers

O'Connell definitely an oversight .. I remember seeing him at the end of his career against Tyrone in Croker and he still had it. Played on the edge but was a class act.

My team would be pretty much the same. Maybe Fay instead of Canty though. I think McAnallen would've been a great full-back too.
