I was at the races early this week.
Between loosing my shirt and the price of accommodation, I had a short week.
Can some explain why hotels are so expensive in Galway?

I think that was just for race week. I moved up here about 6 weeks ago, and last week the price of a pint in the Clayton was a fiver. I had a pint there yesterday and it was 4.40. It's a bit of a shame but places do definitely put their prices up just because it's race week. You're probably better off heading up here during the arts festival. Lots of more fun then, and a nicer crowd around the city. Prices aren't as expensive either. :pac:

Out of curiosity, where did you stay while you were here?

This is a great thread by the way. Lots of great things to see and do here. I'm loving it already. :)

I was also in Galway for the races.
I agree, most of it is a rip-off.
However, I spend some time planning my few days and there was some reasonable value, given the week that was in it.
We stayed at Wards in Lower Salthill - http://www.wardshotel.com/
Small family run hotel. The price was 59 euro pps.
I had seen prices as high as 200 eueo pps for other hotels. There wasa hotel in Claregalway (The Arches) at the same price.

I found two websites that listed a lot of local hotels and I spent a while comparing prices :
    For Galway City - http://www.galway.net
    For Galway County - http://hotels.galway-ireland.ie

I think the Galway Races website should list hotels with prices. This might encourage some healthy competition.

However, I feel that prices will not be as high next year.
I believe there were a lot of cancelled and unsold rooms, given the downturn in the economy.
