most places take that into account and you can buy the book from the site like a 'online store' sorta thing

Are we buyin the books in bulk of say softbacks/hardbacks, or is the choice of cover up to the buyer?

Sorry if it's already been asked, but it's like a maze trying to find answers in the threads about the book!

    Buying in bulk.

    Cheaper Price + cheaper delivery.

No individual choice of cover, group decision.

It hasn't been decided. We know that the book will be up to 120 pages.
Next thing is to get as many responses as possible what services were used by Boardsies and which one could be recommended.

After that, we are going to create another poll with questions What company, What size, What type of book.

I was quite intensively thinking about more pictures per page. Well, every page could represent one person and in case of personal page design, we could consider that as a possibility. However I would personally prefer one picture per page. We are creating photography book and not graphic designers presentation. KISS - Keep It Simple and Stupid.

If you have suggestions to other companies that would be able to produce good quality books for reasonable price, please, feel free to post your suggestions to help us with creating above mentioned next poll.

And yes, the book will be available for further purchases, so as far as I understand, you could be able to order different cover (type) as re-order or new order.

Appreciate all the organising ThOnda but imo you're making it far too complex and also too big.

Remember 120 pages is 240 Photos (double sided pages), probably too much.
40 Pages = 80 Photos, may be enough, given that people historically drop out of these things.

More than one photo per page and as you say graphic design impacts the equation.

Without re-reading the thread, I thought Blurb was already decided on.

Decide on upload of photos, deadline and then someone(s) to design the book (i.e. which photos go where). Consider any complaints/final suggestions and thats it.

If you give 80 people (or even 10) multiple choices, nothing will ever get resolved.

    My 2P.

    T.

Well, I have been corrected that 40 pages means 80 pages with pictures on Blurb. Now, I am corrected back.

If we decide on Blurb, the question stays about dimensions, although 8"x6" was strongly recommended. So the question will be portrait or landscape. I would prefer landscape, however it has to be agreed.

Another question will be softcover or hardback.

I would like to have it as simple as possible, however 105 people have to find consensus on it. That is the reason why I am asking for any suggestions, careful reading of all posted replies and experiences.

I'm not actually doing a boards.related book. My queries about books lately were to do with a Calina related project which was set aside.

I am however looking into putting an exhibition together. Fajitas! and I are of the opinion that the book and the exhibition should remain separate and that is how I see things at the moment.

    This is just for clarification.

Well, we have 106 people. It looks that we should get below 120 picture-pages i.e. 60 sheets of paper. Looks good from financial point of view.
Please, keep posting your suggestions, another step (poll) is about to go soon.

I don't know anything about this crowd, I just found them through google, but they have a square option (I want to submit a portrait photo!)

    http://fotoinsight.co.uk/

    Size: 19.5 x 19.5cm
No. of pages: 26 to 98 pages

    Layouts: More than 100
    Colours: Red, blue, black
    Backgrounds: more than 40

    Basic price for 26 pages(Hard cover): £15.99*
    Additional 8 pages : £2.30*

    Delivery time: 5 working days

    Discount (+50 orders): 15%

    plus p&p per order

    edit:
hmm... actually their 98 pages may be 49 sheets... so may be not what we're looking for...

You know, what to do :-)
We'll make the list after 115 participants. I think that that should leave enough pages for covers, information about the book and other lost space.
However there will be still space left for newcomers, especially if anybody is going to withdraw later during the process.

Th0nda, if your read a novel on holidays and someone asks you how long it was, do you say "well, the pages were numbered up to 480 so it was a 240 page book!" or do you say "480 pages" ?

Blurb is no different, an 80 page book has (almost) 80 printable pages.

BTW, the dimensions are 8x10" or 10x8" not 8"x6"

If the uber-mods can organise a sub-forum as requested, perhaps we could simply decide on landscape or portrait by another poll, but only votable on by people who have paid.

That's the whole point! It's a democracy mel - anyone who pays has the right to enter a photo. Why not? Who cares if the picture isn't up to your standard, it may be up to mine. Or their Auntie Mary's. Whomever. Plus the fact that it's gonna cost them a weekend's worth of drinking money may discourage the more flippant ones ...

It'd be like taking away the right to vote from everyone from Foxrock because they're not as smart as other people.

    :D

For a lot (most?) of people in here, it would be the first time they've seen themselves in print and that in itself may well act as inspiration to go out and work at their photography.

Just kinda thinking out loud here. A few people are saying theme or quality etc etc. Maybe it could be an idea to allow everyone to submit 2 or 3 photos and then a selected person / panel can choose the best or most suitable out of them. Also another option would be to have chapters, one section for sports, landscapes, macro etc.

The calendar might be too brief, I think. I'd imagine that the 12 peope who get their shots chosen would have already been printed elsehere. I think a wee book would benefit the less exprienced and amateur photographers among us who would like to show off their pictures to friends and family. This would be a better example of the boards photography range.

In addition it might be an idea to have one page per member. They can either go for one image or multiple images..

Why do we need to vote? If I pay my €25 (say) I want to choose which image to put in. I don't want anyone else deciding. Also, I question the charity angle - if the unit cost is 25 euro, you'd want to be selling it for €40 to make anything worthwhile. How many books would any individual sell? Not many.

My view is that anyone who wants to participate (i) pays up front for their book and (ii) submits one high quality image plus any text other than a credit, which would be there anyway. Guidelines would need to be established for tech specs and a content guide - for instance if I wanted to have an image of dog poo, I'd imagine whoever is on the page opposite wouldn't be too happy. Otherwise the book should self-edit and entries can be positioned by lottery.

i agree that anyone who wants a photo in the book should be able to have one in it, after all it's not every day that an amateur (like myself) gets the chance to have their photo in a book along with other amazing photos!

with the charity thing i think that's a great idea, i don't mind which charity it goes to as long as it's a good cause, maybe another poll suggesting charities would be a good idea?

There is no theme, barry, that's the point. You get to choose which picture you put it, ie. your favourite or whatever :)
Oh, and I'd agree that we shouldn't have a set theme. This would really limit the number of photographers included and no matter what theme we picked it wouldn't suit everyone. We would be easily down to under 40 photographers.

em not really ( tho don't get me started on my opinions on letting idiots vote, idiots voting = no lisbon treaty), everyone submits their photos, 'democratically as you put it, and it is then put in a pool, where there is say a limit of 80 that go through, 3 weeks voting... winners go through, losers don't... to be honest you can't really get more democratic

    Just revisited this thread.

If ye're talking about putting a limit on the number of contributors to the book then why not have two books?

I'd certainly be happy to be in one of the books (don't care which) and would most likely buy a copy of each.

As for picking my best photo - I passed around my portfolio and asked friends to pick their favourite. I have two ready to go - one landscape and one portrait (kills that argument).

I've already been published and sold prints - I certainly wouldn't want to take away the chance of other people being able to tell their friends "I've a photo in that book". It's very satisfying (especially the first time).

Would anyone from the Boards photography Forum want to be in a Boards.ie Karate competition or for that matter anyone from anyother forum on here like to contribute to one, anyone? No?

The problem with photography is that anyone can pick up a camera and take a photo, I for one would not be interested in buying an album full of basic/average P&S snaps and thats what will happen here if its open to the masses, it just wont have any appeal factor for anyone other than the person whos photo is printed in it and forget about the charity aspect too. Ok the yearbook is not a competition but you get the jist of what I'm trying to say.

There has to be limits to the number of photos and the photos themselves will have to be selected by a panel or whatever. This yearbook should include the best of the photos that have been posted on here over the years and selected by the regs of this forum.

PJW, are you suggesting a panal of people that will choose the photos. Each member here uploads a photo to a flickr site where it gets judged. If OK then they know they're going to be choosen and then forward on the €. If their photo isn't up to a certain 'standard' then they try again until they get it right or until there are no more slots available?

I agree that there has to be a certain quality but also feel it unfair to exclude someone who's willing to part company with their cash for a good cause. I'd just be afraid for this to end with only 30 great photos and 80-odd disappointed people.

BTW, I was #115 to reply to the poll I think. Does that make me in or out? :)

"If" there is to be a selection then it would be very hard for anyone who is active on this forum to do it, especially if they are contributing an image themselves.

I can see two ways to proceed.

1/ It continues as it was & gets limited by numbers alone. Each person has one page/image. Then there will be a mix of experienced & newbies. It would be representitive of the crowd on here. The quality may be a bit mixed but there will variety & it would suit a wide audience.

2/ There is a selection process where only the images deemed to be above a certain quality get selected. If we were to do it this way it would be best to have it done by an independant person. I may well be able to find someone who has an FIPF or an AIPF to do this for us.

how does a mix of good photos and crap ones suit a wider audience than a book of good images? if anything it would cater to a smaller audience.

not saying anyones shots are crap, i love the random photo thread and find it excellent to browse... but its another thing paying to see some of the images

a democracy bases decisions on a voting system where majority wins, its not a free for all like here.

    point of information:
    democracy |diˈmäkrəsē|
    noun ( pl. -cies)
a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives

OK Mel, off you go, you set up the system. Take ownership of it. But I suspect you haven't thought it through:
everyone submits their photos and it is then put in a pool, where there is say a limit of 80 that go through, 3 weeks voting... winners go through, losers don't

How many votes does an individual have? Who can vote? What if there is a tie? What if there are fewer pictures voted on than there are spaces available? What happens if people who have voted don't pay, is your election null and void?

The more I read this thread, the less inclined I am to get involved because I perceive any moderation of the photos as an affront to the people who want to be seen in print. Your rhetoric (winners, losers) smacks of elitism and I don't want any part of that for a project like this.

It's all academic though, until someone takes ownership of being the Treasurer (I'll be away till the end of September) and payment comes in, NOBODY can predict how may people will actually pony up and remain involved.

    Hugh
