Anyone here use the Vodafone 3G Modem with Linux? Does it work straight away. I'm using the Eircom Broadband, which works great at the moment but we're getting rid of the phone as its only really the broadband we want.

This is the modem I'm looking to get!

    Cheers,
    Rob

It looks like a Huawei E220 - like the 3 modem.

I set one up for my brother the other day on Ubuntu 8.04.

Took about three minutes to get it connected using gnome-ppp

You just need to put in the APN and tick a few other boxes and you're away.

    Alternatively check this out ...

    http://polishlinux.org/linux/ubuntu/whats-new-in-ubuntu-810/

    The interesting bit is ...

Is it really worth trying now?

Is it worth migrating to the new Ubuntu version just now? Well, if you like to take risk, just do it. I have used the Alpha version for testing purposes only. Most things are not ready just yet and the system is not as stable like Hardy, which is obvious. The stable release is planned for October 30th so I think it is worth to wait a little bit more.

If you only need the 3G network support there is an option to use it in Ubuntu 8.04. It is enough to add those repositories:

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ubuntu hardy main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ubuntu hardy main

to your /etc/apt/sources.list file… and upgrade your system. Good luck and tell us about your experiences with the latest Alpha!

Get Gnome-PPP on your system, it's deb file so you can install it with one click from a USB drive or similar. Then shut down.

Then plug in the modem, start up your box, and type this in the terminal:
    sudo wvdialconf

This will scan for your modem and find it.

Then it's a matter of filling in the boxes in the gnome-ppp GUI.

You would need to know the APN (I think for 2 Ireland it's "open.internet")

For username and password just use "gprs" for both.

It's probably *99# for the phone number.

The rest of the details should look like on the screenshots (attached)
