The Ethernet cable wont work, But USB will..

I'm with NTL, i have a Motorola surf board modem, The ethernet cable wont work? So i have to use the USB connection to access the internet, which means its only running at 6mb...Were as it should be running at 10mb with the ethernet. Any suggestions on how to get it working? :confused:
