    hi all.

    i have a bmw e36 coupe 316 1999.

my remote lock is called cobra and seems not to be genuine. do these cars usually come with central lock from factory?

also, none of the keys i own for it (3 of them) are able to lock the car or open it once the remote control has been pressed and its off.

they can turn on the car all right, but thats about it.

im concerned because if the remote fobs fail, im basically stuck...

    thanks for enlightening me

Cobra make aftermarket car alarms. Sounds like you have an aftermarket alarm fitted to your car. The alarm most likely is hooked up to your car's central locking and immobiliser. Not sure how it works on a BMW though.

You should be able to get a second alarm fob for it from a Cobra alarm specialist.

i have the 2 fobs no problem. also the code card, so im set there. but what im wondering about is, my keys dont open the door, that is, if ever the battery in the fob was low, i would be stuck outside as the keys do not open the driver door nor the passenger, and neither of the 2 others i have do.

is that normal or does installing the aftermarket alarm render the door lock useless?

Don't know to be honest, it might be worth having a car alarm specialist take a look at it.

sounds like your ignition lock was replaced and you have keys for it and none of the original keys for the doors

ignition lock usually gets broken as a result of theft or attempted theft and lazy garages make no effort to pin the new lock to work using the old keys
