Can I just check I have this right...

    Waterford-Knocktopher = Delayed until January
    Knocktopher-Carlow = On schedule for summer 2010
    Carlow-Kilcullen = Open within a few weeks

Is that basically how it stands right now?

Any news from the Kildare/Carlow guys here on the Kilcullen stretch? Haven't been over that way in a week or so and the Kilcullen tie was well on it's way.

The infill for the northbound tie-in looked nearly finished on Fri; it's about level with the southbound lane and looks like it'll be ready for surfacing very soon based on what I could glimpse while driving by.

Hi Folks, here's a few before and after pics of the Athy-M9 link road. The "before" photo's were taken back in June.
First off is some pics of the road widening near Burtown.

Yeah it will be a while before its finished alright but they are throwing an awful amount of machinery and resources at it at the mo,so my guess would be April/May.

cheers for all those pics yellow.
i wasnt bothered with the athy link as it was progressing sooooooooooo slowly.
but the road has taken some rapid changes over the last month.

Pity really, it's a handy link. It looks a good quality road though, good and wide ;)
I'm happy though to have the main M9 open soon, it will be fantastic for the south east.

Can anyone confirm this. I am really especially interested about the Carlow - Kilcullen part as I use this on a daily basis and it would be great if it opened this side of Christmas

@Daysha - Why are you thinking the Waterford Knocktopher section is delayed till January. As far as I'm aware it's pre-Christmas.

That's what the papers said, but I e-mailed the project office last week and got the following reply:
XXXXX, that was never likely—you can’t believe all you read in the papers. The likely opening date is the end of Jan 09 between Danesfort and Waterford. This is slightly weather dependant in so far as there is an allowance there for normal winter weather whatever that is.

Presumably Joe Gannon meant January 2010.

Oh God, I didn't even notice that! I was wondering what cargo was on about!

Oh sure look, there's about another two months' worth of work left to be done and any delays at this stage can only add a matter of a couple of weeks to that date (or so one would expect!).

The countdown to the southern section opening is now well and truly on! :D

Lads, you can pick up the debate on whether or not all the interurbans were necessary here on this good thread.

    M9 updates only here.

But Furet, does this count as an inter-urban? Id argue no. Not after the Kilkenny turnoff anyway. Perhaps a thread on whether the non-urban motorways were needed?

Not saying the road from Paulstown to Waterford didnt need upgrading, but surely 2+2 from there on would be plenty

As the thread title suggests, this thread is for M9 updates. By all means raise the issue in a new thread, or bump the one I linked to. The discussion would be interesting. But THIS thread is for M9 updates.

I'm wondering if that median was redone. It looks like a bit of Friday evening work in the first shot. :)

following is a reply from the NRA with regard to updates on the M9
    ==================================================
    Mr. xxxxxxx,

The expected completion dates for the schemes on the N9 are as follows:

    - N9 Knocktopher to Waterford: End of 2009/early 2010
    - Kilcullen to Carlow: Quarter 1, 2010
    - Carlow to Knocktopher: Quarter 4, 2010

Unfortunately, I cannot be anymore specific at this stage as he exact
date for the openings have not yet been determined. There are no
    further newsletters at the moment.

    Regards,
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I presume the NRA are been very cautious and these are worst case dates.

    - Kilcullen to Carlow: Quarter 1, 2010 ?? Surely not going by the progress pictures.

  • Registered Users Posts: 229 ✭✭Silverado

Does this mean that delay penalties will have to be paid by the contractor on the Waterford-Knocktopher section which was supposed to be finished by Q3, 2009.

The motorway will be finished by December, but afaik, Roadbridge is still seeking some kind of early finishing bonus which the NRA haven't agreed to. Perhaps they think they'll have it resolved in a few months!

It's a small area, how long do you think it would take to finish?

It seems small alright when you drive past but it takes 10 minutes to walk it believe it or not!

There is some landscaping, lighting and they're putting up a large sign there too though

I had a look at it last night. Assuming what they laid yesterday was an average days work, you should allow 5 - 8 working days to finish the complete surfacing. After that you have all the lining work. I noticed also that they haven't started putting up the new lighting yet either. The landscaping is practically all done though.
