This is crazy stuff. I came through the village on Sunday and they were setting up all the stalls. This would cause a lot of hassle and delays even if it took place on a secondary route never mind a primary route. I can't imagine that in any other country a part of a road linking the second and third largest cities would be completely closed off for a horse fair! They got the roadworks finished in time for it mind, even though the surface is not exactly the smoothest finish in the world

It's all about the horse's boss!!!

Just goes to prove, the N20 is a 3rd world road in a banana republic.

The N6 used to be closed through Balinasloe for the horse fair and that was on a road to Dublin...

Roadworks still going on between Mourneabbey and Rathduff despite the fact they were supposed to finish weeks ago.
A complete joke of a job, luckily the Grenagh to Mourenabbey local route has a fairly good surface.

20 months in to the project and the temporary traffic lights have been back in Buttevant for the past few days also. The clowns are digging holes in the freshly laid surface they only finished last week. Seems to be a sewerage issue.

The traffic queues were outrageous this evening! You couldn't make it up!

Still another 4 weeks to go.

Nothing gained from all this work.

Money spent should've been spent on the M20 planning instead.

    Jokers.

How could it possibly take another month to tension a short section of wire barrier and finish off the line painting?!

Yes the surface has obviously been improved but has the end product been worth the almost 12 months of delays and disruption? Absolutely not! It's made a few consultants, engineers and contractors pretty happy alright though.

Is this the only national route in the country with speed bumps on it? Buttervant you are something else.

Buttevant was closed recently for some horse fair or something of the like. The main road from Cork to Limerick and they shut the damn place.

    Only in Ireland.

Only in Ireland would the second and third cities link road run through a place like Buttevant!

The third & fourth cities don't have a road running through places like Crusheen...

Borrowing costs at very low rates at the moment. Pity the government don't borrow for projects like this and the dart that have great economic benefits and just get them done. Such wasted oppertunity.

Indeed, now I hate socialism and lots of Government magic money tree spending, but on this occasion it makes perfect sense to splash the cash on infrastructure, we'd almost be paid to borrow money at this stage so low is the cost of borrowing at present. Anyway, infrastructure spending, when done wisely (such as the M20), always pays for itself many times over in the long run.

The thing about spending on infrastructure, it is not thought a waste if it achieves its objectives. The Luas is a good example of this, and the major criticism is why was it not done ages ago and properly first time.

Why did they build the Gort to Tuam Motorway ahead of the M20?

From what I understand of the whole fiasco that is the M20, too many local councillors got involved and dragged it out. Whereas the M18 was mostly Clare COCO and they already had this in mind and were very much on board. The tunnel was the same, Limerick City and County saw that it was vital and helped push it along.

One of the reasons it got held up for ages was because Buttevant councillors wanted (and got) a junction to serve their massive population of 1700 added to the plan.

Who knows, without that delay it might have gotten through ABP before Varadker idiotically pulled the plug.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

In fairness, I don't see a problem with a junction for Buttevant, it wouldn't just be serving there; places like Liscarroll, Dromcollagher, Freemount, Doneraile etc would benefit. That said, it would have been far better if they did the M20 without the junction and added it in later. Anyway, the thing is a total fiasco, as we all know only too well. I'm 28 and truthfully I don't expect to be able to use this road until I'm well into my 40s!

I'm disappointed that there isn't a junction for the R515 in Charleville. All Dromcollogher/Newtown/Milford/Newmarket/Kanturk/Ballydesmond (incl. Munster Joinery)/Boherbue/Rathmore etc traffic would use this junction, and take away traffic from the narrow Smiths Lane in Charleville which includes a school and is very busy at the best of times.

    My junctions would be:

    5 M21 - Tralee/Killarney/Adare
    6 R516 - Croom/Bruff
    7 R518 - O'Rourkes Cross: Kilmallock/Bruree
    8 R515 - Dromcollogher/Newmarket/Kanturk
9 (N20) - planned Charleville junction near Lidl place
    10 (N20) - Buttevant/Doneraile
11 N72/N73 - planned junction with N72 relief road around Olivers Cross
    12 (N20) - Mallow South
    13 (N20) - Rathduff/Grenagh/Mourneabbey
    14 R617 - Blarney
    15 M40 - Waterford (N25)/Dublin (N8)/Tralee (N22)/Skibbereen (N71)/Ringaskiddy (N28)/Airport (N27)

I use (N20) here in place of whatever regional number the existing N20 will assume.

    http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/home/213777/roundabouts-proposed-for-two-of-the-most-dangerous-junctions-in-county-limerick.html

Limerick councillor seeking a roundabout at O'Rourkes Cross. This is to be done as part of the M20 project so will knock another few euros off the cost.

O'Rourkes x is deadly to be fair, even with the traffic calming measures they tried to implement. I wouldnt be surprised to see them put traffic lights in there as they seem to be putting them in all over the place!

I really dont mind speedbumps - you just have to slow down going over them. Some amount of people dont even brake and drive over them at normal speeds.

Anyone know what the hell is the holdup on fully opening the Mourneabbey to Rathduff 2&1?

This is the 4th or 5th week in a row where I've driven the road and there's been no sign of any further works. It looks completely finished.

Is there some kind of certification hold up?

It's very frustrating, took an age to drive from Mallow to Cork this morning, mainly due to tractors and self appointed enforcers who sticky rigidly to 60 kph.

That road is riddled in speed traps.

I'd rather stick to 60km/h than doing 60mph if it means keeping a clean licence.

Mate of mine got caught a few weeks back on a sunday.

He was clocked doing 77km/h in the 60km/h zone even though there was no one performing roadworks.

He is now €80 lighter and 3 points heavier.

Was this by a van or a Garda?

Cop with a speed gun. He went after him and caught him.

Hidden until he was almost on top of him apparently.

Not sure exact which part or side of the road it was.

All i know is it was a navy unmarked Avensis 2011 reg.

I'm not sure the ticket and points are valid in this case, as it is a temporary limit and not one adopted by the county council.
There was a similar situation outside Carrigtwohill around 10 years ago when a new limit was put to facilitate the construction of Amgen which subsequently never happened, a lot of speeding cases were thrown out on appeal as the limit had not been formally adopted by the County Council, the limit advisory was then subsequently removed.

Was the road around around Amgen reduced to one lane in each direction at the time?

    Long story short

    He paid the fine.

    Yes for a period.
