Maybe so, but if planning doesn't start for another 5 years then it will be 15 years away.

    At last..

Great to see common sense prevail. Will be interesting to see how much is committed to this in TII's 2017 allocations, seeing as it's a bit of a late addition.

No reason this can't be done in time for the 2023 RWC if the interest is there.

Discussion about the TII's need for more funding (most importantly the M20) including a chat with the Minister for State for Waffling and Talking **** Patrick O'Donovan on the Last Word with Matt Cooper.

Link uploaded here for ease of use: http://www.filedropper.com/lastwordmotorways16nov

Cheers to copper_pipe for the direct link too from which this is cut.

Confirmation from Michael Nolan of TII that we are starting with a blank slate from absolute zero.

O'Donovan was appalling, just bull****ting to get off the radio.

So stupid. They have a good set of plans which went through the whole process already.

I wonder if all the old plans had gone through smoothly with no objections would this road have made it to construction?

There were no real objections though... the old plans were broadly accepted AFAIK. It stopped because the government couldn't afford the CPOs for the route.

Wasnt there an objection from the people of Buttevant

They wanted a junction added and they got it.

With the 10 year timeline being bandied around, and with the RWC potentially coming our way, surely this could be looked at in stages. Half a motorway would be better than no motorway - whether it be Cork to Mallow, or Croom to Mallow.

If that's true then it's an astonishing statement. A preferred route for the M20 was selected in 2009 but the project was then pulled from the An Bord Pleanala process in 2011 by Varadker.

A comprehensive and rigorous route selection, development and design process took place between 2006 and 2009. The only part of that route that requires amending is the tie-in with the current M20 around Attyflin as the Adare bypass route has since been changed. Provision was also included for an interchange with the Cork Northern Ring Road.

One would have to assume that this is merely a deliberate stalling tactic to buy themselves some time so that no significant commitment has to be made to the project for a significant period . Much like the pathetic and completely unnecessary "re-designs" of DART Undergound and Metro North.

The leadership been shown here is truly abysmal.

A few months ago we heard that the Ballybofey bypass and the N14 dual carraigeway had to be done from scratch even though they were sent to ABP in 2009. Disappointing

Without wishing to get too carried away, I'm absolutely delighted (and relieved) to hear that this is back on the agenda.

Yes, we are starting from the very beginning, but at least we are finally starting. It was always the case that once the planning permission was suspended by one Mr Varadkar that we'd have to start all over again, unfortunately.

The fact that it's only costing €1 million is what used to frustrate me so much - there was no reason they couldn't have found the €1 million two or three years ago. But hey, it's better late than never. Hopefully because it's previously been designed, it will be quicker to redo the entire route - we've already got a very good idea of what the route ought to be. But at least now that the logjam of planning permission has finally been broken, perhaps by the time I'm 40 I will be able to travel to Limerick on a motorway after all (I'm 28 at present)!

    It's costing 1 Billion!

    700-780 million.
That's only around 7-8 million per km which is a good price for motorway through a rural area.

Was there a service area planned along the route?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,902 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

There was an idea for one near Charleville, AFAIK.

One east of Mallow as well.
