Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I'm not so sure.

    Existing car licence holder, wants to buy a moped, so needs Class M.

    I thought you'd have to do the AM theory test, and then you can have M added.

    However, according to This Link under 'Rules', it states,
    The basic rule is, categories of lower class vehicles may be added to your existing licence without the requirement of a driving test or a driver theory test.

    So, is M a 'lower' licence than B? Presumably, there is no actual, nor need for, a test for M.

    :confused::confused:

    I think they refer to lower but in the same category?
    the holder of a class C licence can have category C1 added to their licence without having to do a driver theory test or a driving test.
    Likewise, if you hold a category A licence, you are entitled to A1 or M without needing to sit the theory test. Holders of category A1 are entitled to category M without needing to sit the theory test.

    From what I understand the automatic entitlement to an "M" licence has ended, and according to that link, vehicles are now grouped into the below categories:

    * Category AM
    * Category BW
    * Category C
    * Category D

    So, since M isn't in the BW category, then you can't get it. Alternately, if you only have a full bike licence, you can't drive a work vehicle.

    It depends when the cat B licence was issued. If it was issued before the rule change then you don't need to do anything-just ride away (no actual need to have the actual M and moped pictogram on the licence!). If it was issued after the rule change then there should be a code (103 I think) which excludes the cat B holder from riding cat M.

    Would i still not have to apply for the M to be put on my license just in case the guards stop me.
    Also, what is the current situation for carrying passengers? Can a M license holder carry any?

    ...I ended up ringing RSA on it, so here goes:

    If your B licence issued before Oct 06, you have automatic entitlement, so just go to Co Co and get it added f.o.c.

    If your B licence issued post Oct 06, you need:
    AM Theory Test
    Learner Permit
    Do test inside........(ah, crap, forgot to write it down....), 2 years ? Yes, there is now an M test.

    As for passengers, I can only presume it depends on which of the above cases, above, fits your circumstances, i.e. pre Oct 06, with insurance, and a bike with pass footpegs, no problem. I'm not so sure you can on a learner permit.......only after your test, in the 2nd example, above..........but I'm open to correction on that.

    Passengers are fine once you have a licence conforming to the above-ie, cat M explicitly on the full licence or a cat B licence issued before rule change. You do not need the little M pictogram on your licence so long as you hold a valid B licence. Obviously no passengers can be carried if you are riding on a learner's permit.

    I take it that means oct 6th of last year!!
    I passed my b license test last september (2007) but never actually got 'issued' my drivers license until just before i was heading to america in may 08.
    So i think that means i have to do the whole learners permit crap!!! Balls!

    I think it's October 2006-2 years ago, so you missed the deadline by app a year-don't be so hard on yourself.

    Yes it was 2006.

    Having to do a bike theory test etc. is really not a big deal, and you might just learn something that could save your life. Better still, take proper lessons from a qualified bike instructor, and pass the bike test. Good luck!

    I just recently went through all this myself, I had to do the learner permit test, (which is a major pain in the as* !) But just went to the Co. Council and they issued me with an 'AM' license.

    Basic rules are no passengers and you need to do your test within 2 years yada yada....

    A mate of mine just got back out on the road and he previously had a 'B' license which was issued to him pre OCT 2006 so when he went to the Co.Council they just automatically issued him with an 'M' license when he told them he got a moped.

    As for having to redo the learner permit in the category 'AM' when you already have a 'B' license... it's just a major money making scheme.... Recession Ireland

    No, it's not. The bike theory test is not the same as the car test, and with good reason.
