I went today, at about half 10. There were about ten people before me. I'd say there were a good few there after cos a good few arrived while I was waiting. It was the usual "Why do you want to work for American Apparel?", "What are you interested in?" etc. Got on well with the guy who interviewed me so hopefully I'll get it. They said we'll know in two weeks, phonecall if you get it, e-mail if you don't.

And he said it's opening the end of April.

Walked by the shop today and saw the Amercian Apparel hoarding with a 'coming soon' sign. Great to see it's finally happening. It'll be a nice boost for the Grafton Street area. I wonder what took them so long though? Originally they were supposed to start trading before Xmas. Seems strange that they'd miss out on the busiest time of the year...

This is great. I'd love to know what the delay was about though.

My friend was interviewed by one of the girls there and she recently got an email from one saying that they've pushed back the opening to early summer due to planning restrictions. Therefore, they havent decided on their team yet. Did you get this email? Because I was interviewed by the guy too and I didn't. Do you remember his name?

    Thanks!

God, it seems as if this place is destined to never open. How could they have 'planning issues' this late in the game? My understanding is that the building already received extensive alterations when being refurbished and that the landlords won significant leeway with the usual planning code in order to make the store as attractive as possible for retail.

yeah, i went for an interview but it wasn't the open call. got an email there last week:

    Hello,

Sorry for the delay in getting back in touch.

Due to some issues regarding planning permission (the store is in a
listed building) we have put back the opening date to May.

We appreciate your patience and will be in touch as soon as we have
made a decision on our team.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

    Haven't heard anything else yet...

Hi. I went for an interview in the Morgan hotel. i thought i got on really well, however as we know AA is still not open in Grafton street. it was mentioned above that you would receive a phone call if you were successful. did anyone who was interviewed receive said phone call. i have bee in contact with AA and they have said there are delays with planning permission etc and would call asap with opening dates. however it is now may so its exactly two months since interview. Does anyone have any other updates? could you let me know how you may have got on in interview? my hopes of working in AA are seriously dwindling now.

That's exactly how I feel too. Luckily I'm going to Berlin in a few weeks, guess I'll have to stock up then.

Think they signed the lease a couple of weeks ago so they'll be paying the rent even if they don't open, ie, they will open.
Cos and Tous are now looking in Ireland too

I thought they were supposed to be opening in May! Seemingly there's an issue regarding planning permission, though as I said in another post that seems strange given the store was already totally refitted and refurbished specifically for a retail store. It just seems to be one thing after another. Although seeing as they have a big 'coming soon' sign plastered over the front door you'd hope it's too late for them to back out now...

they called me friday, second interview tomorrow afternoon :)

Hi all, am new to boards.ie, found you guys when googling AA. Just wanted to know whether you guys had sent application on their website? As this is what I did, or whether you contacted someone in Ireland directly? Good luck to everyone.
I only applied last week, so will see whether I am way too late, or whether I will be invited for interview etc.
    Kat

Lots of activity around the place lately, in the last few days I've noticed a whack of hard hatted blokes back on site, the arrival of lovely glass doors (Covered up so you can't see in ;)) and plenty of boxes going into the place.

Here we go, here we go, here we go... I suspect.

call today, got the job, opening in july :)

I'll be curious to see if they keep prices in-line with the online shop. Time'll tell.

The shops are always staffed by achingly cool modelly art fashion-student types, I wonder who they'll hire here in Dublin, I think we have a shortage of those kinds of people in Ireland![/quote]

    No harm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭compsys

When o' when in the name of dear God is this shop opening? I've honestly never known a shop to take so long in opening up. I know there's been issues with planning permission and re-negotiations over rent etc. but it's almost been an entire year since it was first reported that the brand was coming to Grafton Street. They're obviously in no hurry to start taking money at the tills that's for sure...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

Yah tiz still not open ...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭PrivateEye

If you're there at the right time you can get a peak inside (builders going in and out) and it looks like it will be open by the end of this month. I don't know how well they will do tbh, beyond one irritating journalist in the Sunday Tribune(no prizes, amirite?) I haven't seen much media hype over this one, and Arnotts Project/BT2 and the like have SLASHED prices in the last few months.

A.A is quite dear for what it does (Though the clothes are top class), I think after an initial busy period it'll be sale-city.

:pac: I've money in a jar upstairs for one of those hoodys :pac:

The official date on the facebook page says July 30th. They've been swamped with planning problems but sure it's just built up the hype!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 claucoke

Yeah it's opening on Thursday the 30th, I've been inside and the shop is huge, it's the biggest AA store in the world, which is crazy. Builders are finished and the shipment is coming from LA next Monday. We're all starting on Monday to get through all the stock as there's only about 20 staff. Hope to see you all when it opens, can't wait!

I for one will AVOID this place like the plague. For a company well known for treating their employees well, I must say I was treated with no respect and mostly kept in the dark.
I went to the walk in interviews in the Morgan hotel in april and was told I got the job. Shook hands and that was that. Got an email later confirming my application and my job. BUT about 3 weeks ago I recieved a very generic email stating my "application" was denied because they filled all their positions and they thanked me for applying. The email didn't even relate to me?! it was as if I had applied online late on in the process.

Call it sour grapes but I'm a believer of bad news spreading faster than good. I will discourage as many people as i can to avoid this shambles of a shop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 zanniem

I was treated the exact same!! i was told i had the job, got really excited, felt the interview went great. Then i heard no word for ages, so i emailed, got the reply regarding planning delays etc and was told i would be called for my 'trial' asap. Again weeks slipped by so this time I phoned, this time I was told they would be interviewing again, but would call back the ones who got on well in the first open interviews in the morgan hotel, I thought this was reasonable as it had been so long people must have made other commitments. I had not made other commitments as I was dying for this job, and willing to move up to dublin form Limerick. I was holding out for a job I was told I had. Needless to say, I too recieved said generic email stating i wouldnt be working in AA. I too feel i was treated very infairly by a clothing company which I was up until now very passionate about and have spent a fortune on. Not nice behaviour, I was led on and no doubt about this.

Plus, the CEO is sort of eh..... a weirdo.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/global-cio/legal/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=212002066
Dov Charney, the controversial CEO of hip retailer American Apparel, held staff meetings while "completely naked" and "paraded in the workplace in his underwear," according to a sensational wrongful termination lawsuit filed last week by a former IT support worker at the company.

Ex-staffer Roberto Hernandez also charged that Charney tried to enlist his cooperation in a scheme to defraud investors by manipulating American Apparel's inventory records.

And well, only so many sexual harrasement lawsuits can end outside of court.

    Still, great hoodies.

The hysteria and excitment iv heard from people is baffling . Its just basics , right ? The only reason its ''cool'' is because they have a smart ad campaign modelled by hipsters , targetted towards hipsters.

Well the hoodies for example look great and fit nice and cosy. There's an Irish way of thinking that for something to be expensive looking it must be over-designed but AA have a clean, classic look that a lot of people appreciate. I don't think it'll catch on here though at all, you'll hear people on this board calling it an expensive Pennys I reckon

Exactly. Clever marketing makes money. Business is business. Even better the fact they make great clothes. Well done American Apparel. I like you :)

    Hi guys,

Thanks so much for relevent info re: opening date etc. For those who will be working at AA for opening on Thursday 30th, do you know what time the store will open at? I have a couple pieces I bought at the store in Bristol that I want to exchange before I head off on hols that afternoon. Do y'all think there's gonna be a bit queue?!

you may not be able to exchange them there. I know in the shop i work in if somebody buys something in our english stores they can not bring it back to our shop here in dublin.
May not be the same for AA but i would keep it in mind.
