QB Chris Simms has signed for the Tennessee Titans, where he will replace Vince Young or back up Kerry Collins.

The Patriots have signed quarterback Matt Gutierrez to their practice squad. He previously signed for NE in May 2007, played five games last season and completed one pass for 15yds. He was released during the summer, when the Patriots decided to keep Cassel instead of him.

Apparently Young sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and could be out for up to four weeks though the Titans have so far only said he will miss next Sundays' game. However, QBs seems to be going down an amazing rate, I see that 49ers QB Alex Smith has been placed on injured reserve, Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle is also out(though not for the season AFAIK), while the Steelers Ben Roethlisberger has a sore shoulder and while limited in practice, will apparently still play against the Browns on Sunday.

You'd have to worry about Vince Young long term. First declaring that he was ready to retire after his rookie season and now the goings on of the last few days-would many coaches trust him to run their offence under pressure?

If Ben doesn't play on Sunday, I would love the chance to see Dennis Dixon get a few series for the Steelers-highly unlikely I know, as the Steelers signed Byron Leftwich when Charlie Batch went down-but boy was he a treat to watch in NCAA-doesn't always transfer to NFL I know...

Anyone surprised that NE hasn't gone after Culpepper? Him and Moss were some 2some in Minny many years ago....

Apaarently there have been rumours of him being suicidal. Close friends of VY rang Jeff Fisher saying he is missing, phone turned off and was in a bad emotional state last time he was seen, and then Fisher set out police cars to find him.

The Titans are reporting that this was all blown out of proportion and it was just a miss understanding. But the fact that Jeff Fisher would take the threat so seriously probably says there is a lot going on behind the scenes, especially with VY saying he wanted to retire in the off season.

I hope VY is alright mentally and if he is struggling he should take some time off or even quit as its not worth it. At least get some consulling.

Young is in a bad place. Hopefully he'll pull through.

    Agreed.

VY mightn't be as technically sound as Brady, Manning etc. but he is fun to watch. That's largely why I prefer NCAA...

Culpepper announced his retirement this week.

I like what the Patriots have done - they have decided to go with a player who has been with them for a few seasons and understands their system through countless hours spent on the practice field and around Brady / the headcoach / and the offensive coordinator. He has also taken a few preseason snaps and performed competently when thrown in last Sunday against the Chiefs.

Chris Simms had one good NFL season and a few disappointing ones. He had a good college career but hasn't proven that he can be a winning starter at the highest level despite a decent opportunity to prove himself. While he has much, much more competitive game experience than Cassell (who has not started a competitive game since highschool), he would have to learn a completely new offense from scratch and probably have to play off a scaled down playbook for a number of games. Cassell knows the whole playbook, knows his teammates - so I think it is a very good decision to give him the reins and see if he can execute consistently and win games. Remember when they stuck with Brady in 2001 after Bledsoe went down. And look how that panned out for them.

Vince Young's mother released a statement to the press yesterday where she described her son as "hurting both inside and out". She claimed that he is struggling from the mental and physical pressures of the starting job at the highest levels and is suffering from severe stress and strain. It is felt that - irrespective of the injury he picked up at the weekend - the Titans may give him the rest of the year off to clear his head and let him get refocused and centered for next year.

If that happens, the Titans are lucky in that they have one of the most experienced and accomplished number 2 quarterbacks in the league to call on in Kerry Collins. The former Heisman trophy finalist led the Giants to the superbowl in 2000 and has been in the league 13 years. Collins has never been top class - but he has been competent more often than not and knows how to move the chains and manage an offense. The Titans will have lost the big play threat that Young brings with his feet - but Collins has a better arm. Everything hinges on their dominating defense anyway.

Simms will be brought in to back up Collins - which I think is a much better fit than having him start in New England.

Yes-but that was because he didn't feel he was getting enough money/playing time to sign with anyone who was interested-so he wouldn't be that hard to coax back into the game if someone could offer him a job at the right money.

I agree with what you have said about the Pats decision though-Cassel could be as good as anyone else out there at the moment-even if he spent his college career as a back-up as well (albeit to 2 very good college QBs).

Even if Patriots signed Culpepper he would only be there to back-up Cassell and set in if he got injuried/had a complete shocker the likes of which no QB has ever had kind of shocker.

Also, Culpepper is so banged up I'd be amazed if he last the year uninjuried.

I agree with the person above.
Culpepper had an outstanding few years in the NFL with the Vikes but after that horrific knee injury he was never the same. The Vikings, probably predicting the future dealt him to Miami, where he faired no better, see those first few games? He was on the run constanly and seemed far too nervous to settle down, his knee was the problem.
Yes, he had a few decent stints at the Raiders, but Culpepper might even know himself that he's wrecked. No teams offered to take him on. Not even the Patriots, Culpepper has retired and it'll look like that forever.

Bill's gonna start Cassel, although I would'ave liked to see Simms sign as a backup/insurance policy it didn't pan out. Belichick is keeping his cards close to his chest on this one.
