I'm a first year and I got my student card last Thursday. I tried to get into the library on the same day to check it out but my student card wasn't recognised. Do I have to wait a while or is this unusual?

Did you try asking at the desk? Those machines can be a bit tempermental.

You need to wait 24 hours between getting a student card and using it to take books from the library.

The library is only there for visual impact, you're not supposed to actually try and enter it.
