Commuter for ~€300

My friend is looking for a new bike and I had to spend a while convincing him to spend more than €100 so the budget isn't able to stretch much.

Giant CRS 4.0 seems to be the bike that keeps popping up, is there anything else I should be looking at in this price range?

If it's really, really €300 max, then I'd go for an entry level MTB, probably Giant, Trek or Specialized. And get the shop to put slicks on (should be free swap).

Looking around there seems to be much better value in the MTB's, very surprised no one has cornered urban/city bikes in the same way.

Decided on a GT Avalance.

The 3.0 for €315 or 2.0 for €380 if I can convince him. Any opinions? They seem to be well liked.

Buy a new set of tyres with no treads, It'd make life a lot easier for road-cycling.
