A lot of blues/metal noodlers in this thread so some of my choices are probably a bit on the unpopular side.

    Daniel Ash(Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones & Tail) -

    Mik Ribiat(Cinema Strange) -

    Bernard Summer(Joy Division) -

Billy Corgan(before he went all "Born Again") -

Mikael Åkerfeldt and Peter Lindgren(Opeth) -

I like a bit of Gilmour too, to be honest, and Jeff Beck, and Josh Homme.

Never understood why there aren't more girl guitarists. Is the Electric Guitar too masculine an instrument? Seems odd there are quite a few girl bassists then, since that's more ballsy.

Even if it was masculine/feminine thing which is a bit bollocks, the electric guitar is one of the best instruments at making "Pretty" sounds. Get a brightly voiced amp, a chorus pedal and a delay pedal and you're set.

guitardan is my guitar teacher, one of the most versatile and best guitarist around, a shame he was never noticed¬.!!!

Took lessons from him for about a year, totally transformed my playing!!
Only person that could ever explain theory to me in a way I understood it, when I came to him I was stuck in the pentatonic blues scale and could barely play a slash solo, Now Im jammin Malmstein and Gilbert.

Amazing teacher, Great guy, all round guitar hero!!

I definitely think Kieran Murphy should be on the list.

All songs on his Per Se album were composed by himself and the album was recorded when he was 17. Unfortunately he seems to be having some problems and has disappeared. It’s now difficult if not impossible to purchase his music. But there is still some (Poor Quality) clips on you tube. The man is a musical genius.

    paul gilbert
    .

I don’t get Paul Gilbert at all. Sure he is extremely fast and dexterous and people seem to admire him for his technical ability but where is the music?

Lots of Guitar Players play fast and are very technical but they are also musical as well which is something I think Gilbert lacks or at least in what Ive heard of him so far.

    Rory Gallagher
    Angus Young
    Eric Clapton
    John frusciante
    and no.1 Richie Sambora

but after seeing this thead it has to be Andy Mckee

saw "i'm in a rock and roll band" on bbc this year, covered best musicians in each field and gave some good examples(left out a few though),in guitar they name slash, jimmy page and jimi hendrix as the best three guitarists with jimi taking 1st spot, they're all great but way i see it, had to have been

3.Tony Iommi (Had his tools(fingertips) damaged and still went on to greatness, plus he's written some of the best riffs known in music)

    2.Dave Gilmour(best Soloist i've ever heard)

1.Eric Clapton(he's done it all and more)

I don't know about the best but my three favourite would be as follows:

For me it's John Fahey, he was a big fan of old time bluesmen like Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt etc. and took some of that to travel a very unique path himself.

DADGAD (below recording tuned down one semi-tone)

Anyone here ever listen do Vini Reilly of the Durutti Column?
Really talent guitarist who made some fantastic music.
Emerged from Manchester through Factory records in the post punk era in the late 70s.Never got much of an audience in the U.K or Ireland outside Manchester but supposedly has a cult mainland European following.
