Don't know if anyone has mentioned this earlier in the thread, but the best cheap beer is available from Dunnes -

    KAISERDOM

It's less then 6.50 euro for 6 500ml bottles, and it's a proper, decent german lager. It's not the best lager in Germany, but it's miles better then stuff like Heineken, Budweiser, and Carlsberg, and is way cheaper.

Regarding cans, there's no such thing as a good cheap beer in a can really, taste wise they're all pretty poor and much of a muchness. Especially not from a can. The only thing i'd drink from a can is stout or cider. Defo not beer.

There's nothing wrong with beer in a can. Canned beer keeps it's flavour better than bottled, and a few American microbreweries are even switching from bottles in favour of cans - like Anchor Steam Beer.

That is not surprising, people are usually pigging out at christmas, food makes a massive difference to blood alcohol levels achieved with the same amount. I can get on my way with 4 cans on an empty stomach, it would take about 8-10 to do the same after a big christmas dinner, also at christmas people tend to drink more frequently, day after day, so you build up a tolerance. A mate of mine used to brag about the amount he ate, but he would leave the pub and have sneaky bags of chips & burgers, once he had a full chinese meal and came back to drink more.

Trying not to feel as though I've been the Victim of a patronising, dismissive hit and run......

    - But no. Just no.

It was mentioned way back but no harm in reminding everyone of its existance!
I can also vouch for its drinkability, and at that price its a steal.

And Newry too. The quality ales are 3 for £4, for 500mls. The cheaper stuff in cans can sometimes work out at almost 50p a can if buy a slab of it (but maybe 440mls).

We did a blind taste recently and found the 50c Tesco Premium Lager to be better than any of the cheap alternatives, and nicer than Heineken too.

    jeeze. must try it. ^

also london pride seems to get a lot of plaudits here. whats the nearest in comparison. ta

London pride is an English Pale Ale. There is nothing available in an Irish pub that comes close. Possibly the Porterhouse TSB on cask is the closest in style but it does not taste that similar.

The only similar beer would be from bottles you get in decent off licenses that sell world and craft beer or a specialised beer bar like The Bull and Castle.

Interestingly i find lech (although a great beer) gives me a bit of whopper of a hangover. Especially if i drink a different brand of beer on the same night. Tyskie, zywiec no problems.

Unfortunately ive had to abstain from it for this reason which is annoying because its fookin delicious.

Stella (wella away from it!) Artois gave me the worst hangover ever recorded a few years ago so i avoid it like the plague.

I was drinking this at a party and there was the usual Carlsberg, Bud etc on offer but once my mates tasted these they feckin drunk all them first from the bin full of beers and ice

Was this on offer? don't think I have seen it that cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭donaghs

I'd agree that most of the so-called "premium" lagers don't taste much different than bargain ones, but you can't mistake any of them for something like Badger Golden Glory Ale (3 for £4 in Sainsburys).

Also some cheap lagers are genuinally horrible. Over a decade ago I remember a beer called "Danish Gold" which had a horrible after-taste something like rancid butter on a rusty spoon.

Thats because the beers you mentioned are weak, tasteless dish water. I used to drink the usual hum-drum irish favourites like carlsberg, bud, heineken, miller & now that ive become used to some of the excellent polish/german beers I wouldn't touch em with a barge pole.

IMO even the cheap-as-chips Polish/german beers like Karpackie & Perllenbacher are superior to the above 'premium' lagers. Im starting to think the premium claim refers to the price.

A few beers on offer in the Aldi this week. Saint Etienne for 99c a can. This stuff is just made in Belgium and is very like Stella, in fact many say its better. I will have to get a few for a taste challenge :)

LagerAldi[URL="javascript:thisPos=document.getElementById('r4').offsetTop;showDetails('Aldi'%20,'<b>Aldi\'s%20Sainte%20Etienne%20Premium%20Belgian%20Lager,%20%204x%20500ml,%20%20Alc%205%.</b><br>%20You\'ll%20struggle%20to%20find%20any%20better%20Belgium%20lager%20in%20a%20can.<br>%20Competing%20Brand:%20Stella%20Artois%20%20<br>%20<br>'%20,'9','2.99','Yes','<b>Alcohol%20Units:</b>%202.5%20units%20per%20can<br><b>Contains:</b>%20Gluten%20from%20Barley%20&%20Wheat','No','No','beer',''%20,%20thisPos%20,'beer','00004')%20;"]Aldi's Sainte Etienne Premium Belgian Lager, 4x 500ml, Alc 5%.

Wise is the man who is willing to admit he may have been slightly over-zealous in his dismissal of canned lager :) I did a blind tasting session (bottle v can) last weekend with three beer afficionado friends in Limerick on a small selection of beers with the following results.

Tyskie - 3/4 of us preferred it from the bottle, including myself
Lech - 4/4 of us thought it was as good from the can as the bottle
Aldaris Zelta - 2 of the lads favoured the bottle version, 1 the can and i thought they were equally good.
Zubr - All 4 agreed the can tasted better.
Zywiec - I thought the bottle tasted better, the rest went for the can.
Ureich - Not a great lager but we all favoured the bottle over the can
Becks - 2 went for the can, 2 for the bottle.
Heineken - 3 of us including myself favoured the bottle.

So pretty much 60/40 in favour of the bottle, but the can fared well i must admit. I admit to being rather unjustly ignorant towards cans, however i do still feel that a good bottled beer can't be beaten by a can most of the time.

Right so this weekend i will mostly be drinking tesco premium beer.

Have to check it out, its getting some serious praise on here.

Just picked up 12X440ml Saint Etienne 4.8%ABV for €9.98 in Aldi. They also have 4X440ml Lowenstein 4.5%ABV for €2.99.

I only seen the Lowenstein in their promotional mag. Has anybody tried it????

I will blind taste St Etienne can with Stella Artois can and report back :D

Right; had a few cans of Bavaria over in Paris the weekend. Not just any Bavaria, 7.9% stuff - and it was really nice. Any chance this is available in Ireland?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,891 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Don't think so, but you can get the 8.6% ABV version. Just follow the tramps.

Made in Belgium and a Stella Artois copy. Maybe even made by the makers of Stella for Aldi when you look at the colour scheme on the can.:)

    A snippet from the Sun

    ALDI (Best beer)

Six British pork and herb sausages, £1.99; four Ashfield Farm quarter pounders, £1.99; disposable barbecue twin pack, £2.99; four 500ml cans of St Etienne lager, £2.89.

    Total: £9.86

Verdict: You can't beat a chilled Belgian beer, and this was the best of the bunch.
