Hi

I hope someone with a bit of knowledge of the IT security sector can help me. I've been in an IT security admin role for about 2 years now and I'm wondering what my next step will be, I don't have any certs behind me so I would like to start studying for some. I want to concentrate in the security area but I'm not too sure which one to pick.

I know of the cisco and microsoft security options but what other exams would be worth doing in security? I don't think there is much point in me doing the security + as I have 2 years experience and I think I'll rule out the CISSP as it seems too much theory-based. So what other certs are in demand by employers in the security sector?

Main one in the Security area is CISSP by ISC2

THere are varying levels requiring different experience and exams.

The CISSP requires a minimum of 4 years security related work (thats if you have a degree)

Thanks for the reply ginger.What type of reputation do ISC certs have in Ireland? I know most people have heard of their CISSP but I wasn't aware of some of their other exams. Has anyone here done any other ISC exams apart from CISSP? If so, what was your experience of them?

ISC2 certs are as far as I know well recognised within the security field. People not in that field probably are not aware of the CISSP or the other ones.

Hopefully one of the the guys certified in this will drop in and give you a better answer

Okay thanks. Just reading up about it there, it seems to be more like the CISSP in that its more to do with planning/design.

I suppose I'm more interested in the implementation side of things, which are probably the microsoft/cisco exams. But does anyone know of the alternatives to those two that deal specifically with security implementation?

You could start out with the Security+ from CompTIA for a start, which is widely recognised and will give you a start on getting some of the more niche ones.

GIAC also do security implementation certs.

There are also specific vendor certs such as Juniper, CheckPoint and Cisco as well as the MSCA/MCSE Security specialisation.
