    I'm wondering is it possible to replace the firmware on the eircom supplied Netopia 2247 with standard netopia image?
    Reason being I've switched from eircom to Smart and would like to continue using my Netopia router.
    Thanks for any help.

    I don't know for certain but probably. Eircom initially released the 3347 with generic firmware then released an update which branded it as an eircom one. So I'd say there's probably a generic 2247 firmware floating around. You'll be able to use it with Smart even without changing the firmware though.

    There has been various postings on this in the Smart forums - have a check here http://support.smarttelecom.ie/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2http://

    Thanks for the replies. I already tried to connect using the username and password supplied by Smart but it didn't work. I presumed it was something to do with the router being specifically for Eircom with special settings in the firmware or some other jiggery pokery...

    My eircom router works fine with BT - I've swapped it a couple of times with my BT Voyager router when I thought I had issues..

    is the eircon modem able to do adsl2+? Smart use this and eircon use the now defunct adsl standard. Check to see if the modulation can be changed.

    It can handle ADSL2+ alright. The 3347 and 2247 are ADSL2 compatible with a firmware upgrade.
    In expert settings/statistics/dsl it says;
    Line state : Up
    Modulation : ADSL2+
    Data path : Interleave
    The main router page shows;
    DSL : Available
    eircom broadband : Disconnected.
    When I press connect it attempts to connect but no joy.........

    Do search the Smart forum you will find info there about making it adsl2 compatible and able to sign on to Smart.

    You'll have to change the VPI and VCI settings along with the username and password most likely.

    No need for new firmware.

    There is absolutely no need to change the VPI and VCI settings.

    And if you look here you may find the answer to getting it to work with Smart:

    Sweet. That did the trick. Had to follow the steps in the post from lennyman and telnet to the router and set a few things but now it's connecting :)
    Thanks for all your help!
