Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does GR involvement hinder AGS acceptance?

    Hi,

I really want a career in AGS but I have another year of my college course to finish. I'm trying to improve my Gaeilge and have gotten involved with some volunteer work to show community involvement.

My question is, does joining the Garda Reserve actively lessen your chances of acceptance to the full time force? From the point of view that if you progress to full time training that's a Garda Reserve member they spent money training out of the system. They will then have to spend money training more people for reserve duty.

Any opinion welcome. I've just applied for the Garda Reserve so I have a good amount of time to decide but I'm just curious! :D

Well good luck first off. I was half thinking of doing what you're doing, but I decided I wouldn't. As you said, they might not like you going for full time after a only a year or so in GR, due to cost of training and beefing up number of Reservists etc.

However, it is good experience I'm told, and if you get it and stick with it, it WILL help your application to full time, but it won't guarantee it(well, that is the general consensus!).

    :)

Jaysus they dont think of it like that at all, The GR can be seen and is seen as a stepping stone to the Full time service and they wont tell you otherwise!.

I know it is in the long term, but in the short term?

Honestly, I dont think it matters either way. The only time in the recruitment process it will come up will be in either your interview or your informal meeting with Sergeant/ Super. If and when it does, once you have an answer to hand it's not going to make a difference.. i.e: becoming a reserve increased my interest in becoming a full timer, and it's now what I want to do full time etc. etc..

Once you pass each stage I can't imagine anyone sitting down to look at your overall application and saying 'oooh he's only in the reserves a year, what a waste of money, let's hold up his application or refuse him'.
The recruitment phases are quite fair. Each one a little stepping stone. If you want it, go for it.
